Fitness queen Kayla Itsines is known for being both inspirational and honest on her Instagram page — and in real life. She often shares truth nuggets with her millions of fans, like the time she opened up about the workout she always skips or the moment she got real about her missteps as an exercise role model.
Now, Kayla is opening up about something outside of fitness: her hair. In a ‘gram posted on Monday (July 24), the 26-year-old explained that the long locks we see on her social media are actually the result of a clip-in ponytail, and that her real hair is actually quite short. “I have genetically really thin hair (my grandma and mum both have really thin hair as does a lot of my family). … It is something I have come to terms with over the years. I have a family history of female pattern baldness,” Kayla explained.
She went on to say that her thin hair has been a source of insecurity for her over the years, but recently, she’s started to come to terms with it. “I am at peace with it and I will not let it rule my life,” she added. “So instead I focus on being healthy and happy. This is definitely a really difficult thing to do and I know from first hand experience, but it is definitely worth it and you have NOTHING to be shy about, be PROUD.”
Kayla ended her post by asking her followers if they’ve ever experienced anything similar, and the comments are filled with people who can definitely relate. The common thread in all of the notes under her photo? Everyone is thanking her for her honesty, noting that her story helped them feel better about themselves.
Hair loss among women is actually pretty common. According to the North American Hair Research Society, female pattern hair loss occurs in 50% of women by the age of 50 years old, although the intensity and severity can range, depending upon the individual. However, it’s nothing to be embarrassed about, and hopefully if more people like Kayla speak out and shed light on the issue, it will help others feel less self-conscious and not alone.
I have had a lot of you girls ask me about my hair!! So here is a fact that I haven’t actually ever really spoken about. My natural hair is actually super short. I have genetically really thin hair (my grandma and mum both have really thin hair as does a lot of my family) I often just wear a clip in pony tail when I want long hair. It is something I have come to terms with over the years. I have a family history of female pattern baldness. 😁 Most days, as you would see, I leave my hair in a messy bun with a hair tie and I do nothing with it 😝👵🏼 I know we all have our own little insecurities, and one of mine has always been my hair, but it is just me! I can see my hair getting thinner and thinner the older I get. Yes, of course I’m super conscious about it and Ive tried everything to fix it, trust me. But, at the same time, I am at peace with it and I will not let it rule my life. So instead I focus on being healthy and happy. This is definitely a really difficult thing to do and I know from first hand experience, but it is definitely worth it and you have NOTHING to be shy about, be PROUD. I am sure all of you girls know what I am saying, so lets talk about it. Have you ever experienced anything like this? 💜💛www.kaylaitsines.com/app
