The Madras High Court has issued notice to the state government on a petition seeking to extend the scholarship facility to Backward Class (BC) and Most Backward Class (MBC) students studying in private self-financing colleges.

Why was the notice issued?

Justice M Sathyanarayanan ordered the notice on a petition filed by a student S Sowmya, but then, adjourned the matter by a week for further hearing, according to a report of PTI.

What did the petition say?

  • The petitioner had submitted a statement saying that she belonged to the Backward Class Vanniar community and was the daughter of a daily wage earner. Last year, she had joined B.Sc physics in a private college in Taramangalam in Salem district
  • However, in view of her family’s poor economic background, she was unable to pay her college fees in the second year and may be forced to discontinue studies
  • She had made a representation to the authorities concerned, requesting to extend scholarship facility to BC and MBC students, which are now available to those studying in government colleges, to private institutions as well
  • Her counsel submitted that there cannot be any discrimination between the students studying in government and private colleges and urged the court to direct authorities to consider the plea for scholarship.
