Thinning hair doesn’t happen just because. There are a whole host of factors that can cause your hair to look sparse. Here’s what’s going on.

Your Genes

Englewood Cliffs, NJ, dermatologist Jeffrey Rapaport, MD, says that your genes are probably the most common cause for thinning hair. “As women get older, it’s normal for them to start to see thinning. When genetics play a role, we sometimes see the thinning much earlier on or it’s more intensified.”

Your Hormones

Anything that alters your hormone levels—think birth control, menopause or pregnancy—can be responsible for hair that’s thinner than normal. Plano, TX, plastic surgeon Joseph Yaker, MD, says thinning hair is especially common in menopausal women because estrogen levels diminish. “The hormone estrogen is essential for protecting the hair.” Hormone-related disorders like polycystic ovary syndrome can impact the thickness of hair, too.

Having a Baby

During pregnancy, hair is thick, shiny andvoluminous. But post-pregnancy, it’s not uncommon for the hair to begin temporarily thinning out (and even breaking) due to a shift in hormones. About three months after delivery, hormones send the hair from an active, growing state into a resting one. For the most part, once your hormone levels even out, your hair should return back to normal.

Damaged Stem Cells in Hair Follicles

A rather new discovery in the world of thinning, the more damage (predominantly caused by aging) that occurs to the stem cells that live in the hair follicles, the more likely it is for those stem cells to turn into skin. Years of this transfer causes the follicles to shrink in size to the point that there is more skin than hair in the area, leading to patches of thinning hair or even bald spots.

Excessive Amounts of Vitamin A

One of the more under-the-radar causes of thinning hair is taking too many supplements with vitamin A, which sends the hair growth cycleinto a tailspin. However, once you stop taking high levels of the vitamin, your body will revert back to baseline and your hair should continue to grow regularly.

A Lack of Protein

Going vegetarian or vegan may do wonders for your body, but chances are it won’t do much for your hair. While not everyone who forgoes animal-based sources of protein experiences thinning hair, it’s not uncommon to see signs of thinning and hair loss because protein is often limited. To reverse the effects, take a protein and iron supplement or start to add reliable protein sources, like beans, quinoaand tempeh, into your diet.

Stress

Any type of emotional or physical stress can send your hair into a temporary state of disarray and here’s why. When your body is stressed, an uneven number of hairs transfer into the resting phase all at once. Then, when those hairs fall out, more than normal amounts are shed.

Medical Conditions and Autoimmune Disorders

When the immune system has to work overtime to keep symptoms of certain diseases at bay, the body may not be able to sort out what’s going on and mistake hair as something foreign and harmful to the body. Palo Alto, CA, facial plastic surgeon Jill Hessler, MD, says that low thyroid levels can lead to hair loss. Hair thinning and hair loss caused by autoimmune disorders, also known as alopecia areata, is one of the harder types of thinning to treat.

Sudden Weight Loss

Dropping a serious amount of weight extremely fast (think 25 pounds in one month) can cause trauma to your hair, leaving it thin and weak. It’s not the weight loss itself that causes it, but rather the lack of vitamins, nutrients and healthy fats that you may be depriving yourself of that change the texture of your hair.

Overstyling and Abusing Your Hair

Everything in moderation is the best approach to take when it comes to your hair. “Some hair types can’t tolerate the same amount of heat styling as others, but you need to know what your hair can withstand,” says Bumble and bumble stylist and educator, Carrie Hill. “Use medium heat instead of high heat and give your hot tools a break by using them every other day instead of every day.”

If you saw our stash of hair masks and heat serums, you’d know how protective we are over our hair’s health. But when a recent article surfaced warning about the potential damage our purses—yes, you read that right—could be doing to our locks, time about stopped. Here’s the breakdown.

When Lisa DeSantis sat down in her salon chair and listened to her first-time hairstylist, Francis Catanese, a stylist at Art and Autonomy in New York City, immediately ask her if she wore her purse on the left side, she thought her lopsided posture was a surefire giveaway. But when Catanese replied with, “I can tell because your hair is thinner on that side,” adding that he’s seen it worse, but that there was definitely a difference present, DeSantis was in for a crash course (and so were we).

Catanese went on to explain that the strap of your handbag can often pull at your hairs, weaken the follicles and cause breakage you didn’t even know about. Even worse, it can be plucking the strands right out. But take this for what it’s worth: After reaching out to various doctors for their input, none had heard of the case affecting the health of our hair.

Fortunately, there’s a simple solution to help save your strands either way. First off, be aware of where your hair sits each time you throw a bag on your shoulder—either move them to the side or clip them up to be sure—because you never know if any hair is lagging behind that can get damaged, or even worse plucked out, because of your handbag. The same goes for backpacks. If you’re not careful, you could potentially thin your hair out on both sides, an even bigger tragedy.

Don’t blame Dubai for your hair loss: Celeb surgeon

Hair transplant surgeon Dr. Sajjad Khan busts some myths on hair loss

How many times have you heard your friends and colleagues blaming Dubai for their increased hair loss? They attribute it to the water in the city.

We now have the misconception cleared, thanks to Dr. Sajjad Khan, the celebrity hair transplant surgeon in Dubai to attend his high-profile clients. To his credit, he has the biggest actors in Bollywood, royalty and athletes among his clientele. His website mentions Gulshan Grover, Sanjay Kapoor, singer Abhijeet Bhattacharya and few more but it is the names he shared in confidence during our interview that left us baffled.

Being associated with Dubai for the past two decades, he knows what the reasons for hair loss – and water is not one of them. “I laugh when some of my clients insist on washing their hair with mineral water. It is not required at all. If you have so much money, give it to charity. If the water in Dubai is harsh, it will only make your hair brittle but that could be mended by using a better shampoo and conditioner,” said Dr. Khan.

And that’s not the only myth he busted during the chat he had with City Times.

Dr. Khan goes on to share that a majority of his clients are men who suffer from genetic hair loss. “Men are more prone to balding because of their genetics, but it can be corrected with a good diet and regular exercise. The problem, however, is that if we don’t address the hair loss issue, and don’t seek timely medical help, it may be too late to reverse the damage.”

While hair transplant can be an effective one-time solution, in many cases, regenerative medicine can fix your hair woes. “Great hair starts with a healthy scalp and regenerative treatments can harness the power of your own body’s stem cells to strengthen hair and reduce loss,” Dr. Khan explained.

Hair loss in women

It is not only men, genetics is also responsible for hair loss among women – at least in 50 per cent of the cases.The other 50 per cent is metabolic as women’s bodies go through many changes due to pregnancy or menopause.Special attention should be given to pregnant women’s diets because sometimes, the hair they shed never comes back, Dr. Khan cautioned.

Menopause is a very critical time as 90 per cent of the estrogen levels drop due to the reduction in testosterone levels, he said. It is the imbalance in hormone levels that leads to hair loss.”In these cases, replacement therapy is very helpful as estrogen levels can be restored. If replacement therapy is not an option, regenerative medicine can regenerate hair through your own body stems.”The other common causes of hair loss among women include low hemoglobin levels and thyroid hormone levels. Drastic weight loss (3-4 kg a month) can also lead to hair fall or thinning hair, he said.

Summer care for you hair

During summer, your hair becomes dry due to the heat. The average moisture in hair should be around 8 to 10 per cent and losing it, makes your hair brittle. “In case of extreme temperatures, you could use thermal active heat protectant on your hair. It coats the hair and you don’t risk losing the moisture,” Dr Khan advised. He further stated that ultra-violet rays affect the hair cuticles and weaken them. “You could also mix SPF 30+, oil free sun-screen into your conditioner and apply it to your hair to provide extra protection.”

Don’t use conditioner on scalp

The focus, these days, is to make the scalp better, and healthier. If your scalp is not treated right, your hair will never be healthy. Today’s conditioners are conducive for the scalp too and you have to moisturise your scalp.

Opt for sulfate-free shampoos

The notion of using shampoos without sulfate is wrong. Sulphate-free shampoos are not a must, but you must look for milder sulfates.

Go organic

Not all organic hair products are good for your hair. Some sophisticated ingredients are needed for healthy hair and scalp. Organic ingredients cannot provide them. It is necessary to consult a hair expert and opt for the best shampoo by renowned pharma brands.

Scissors matter

Professional hair stylists use top-quality scissors that range (Some costing $200 to $500). The stylist’s scissors must be well-maintained as dull scissors damage hair cuticles and lead to split ends.

Regularly oiling your hair

Mind Your Diet During Pregnancy to Cut C-Sec Risk

A woman’s diet plays a crucial role in her future plan of conceiving a child. According to a study done by Queen Mary University of London (QMUL) in England, half of all women of childbearing age worldwide are overweight or obese, which puts both mother and the child at risk during pregnancy and later life. As such following a healthy diet combined with physical activity before and during pregnancy can help a great deal, as stated by the researchers.
Resorting to moderate intensity exercise such as aerobics exercises and stationary cycling during pregnancy may decrease the risk of having a caesarean section (C-sec) or developing diabetes, suggest the researchers. The findings showed that dieting combined with physical activity significantly reduced the mother’s weight gain during pregnancy by an average of 0.7 kg. It also lowered the odds of the mother having a caesarean section by about 10 per cent, the research revealed.

Caesarean section can carry risks such as infections for the mother and breathing difficulties for the baby. “For every 40 mothers who follow the healthy diet and moderate exercise, one less woman will end up with a caesarean section,” said Shakila Thangaratinam, Professor at Queen Mary University of London (QMUL).

Changes in lifestyle reduced the risk of diabetes in pregnancy by 24 per cent, which normally affects over one in 10 mothers in pregnancy and increases risks of complications in mother and the baby.

“Our findings are important because it is often thought that pregnant women shouldn’t exercise because it may harm the baby,” Thangaratinam said.

 

But the study, published in The BMJ, shows “that the babies are not affected by physical activity or dieting, and that there are additional benefits including a reduction in maternal weight gain, diabetes in pregnancy, and the risk of requiring a caesarean section”, she added.

For the study, the team looked at the individual participant data for 12,526 pregnant women across 36 previous trials in 16 countries, which compared the effects of dieting and physical activity.

Moisturise your skin with this natural face mask

Those Black Dots on Your Nose Are Probably Not Blackheads

Blackheads are big business. Products that promise to remove them, treatments that totally tackle them and mesmerizing videos that show people popping them (yes, it’s totally gross and, yes, we’re guilty of tuning in) are undeniably all the rage. But, as New York dermatologist Doris Day, MD, reveals, not are all blackheads are really blackheads at all.

“Some people think the black dots on their nose are clogged pores or blackheads,” she says. “They are, in fact, mostly fine hairs or sebaceous filaments, which is a combination of sebum and skin cells.”

So now that all our skin care beliefs are shaken to the core, how can we tell what’s what? “They’re different from blackheads since those are formed from an obstruction of the follicular opening and are pathologic, while sebaceous filaments are more common and often normally found in the nose, as this is an area with more active sebaceous glands,” Dr. Day explains.

While Montclair, NJ, dermatologist Jeanine B. Downie, MD, does note that many people do have actual blackheads on the nose, she says that, regardless of which one ails you, the course of treatment for both is pretty similar. “They are both treated with light/medium exfoliation, extraction, use of sunblock and chemical peels.”

Manuka Honey

You’ve probably seen headlines like: “I Washed My Face With Honey and It Was the Most Amazing Thing Ever.” Though we don’t actually drizzle the stuff on our face as if it’s a parfait, honey as a skin-care ingredient — specifically manuka honey from New Zealand or Australia — is, in fact, amazing. Unlike the antioxidants in other honey varieties, “the ones in manuka honey are very strong, so they don’t get destroyed as easily,” says Jeannette Graf, a dermatologist in Great Neck, New York. Add to that the fact that manuka honey is super moisturizing and suddenly smearing it on directly from the jar doesn’t seem so crazy after all. “It’s also antibacterial, which means it’s good for acne,” says Graf. Kiehl’s Pure Vitality Skin Renewing Cream relies on the ingredient’s high polyphenol content to protect the skin barrier while moisturizing, and Kate Somerville Goat Milk De-Puffing Eye Balm ($38) pairs manuka honey with peptides to soften lines and leave skin dewy.

Bearberry

Also known by what’s surely a Balderdash word (kinnikinnick), the bearberry plant is one of nature’s most potent skin brighteners. In addition to antioxidants, bearberry extract contains arbutin, which acts a lot like hydroquinone (the most effective ingredient for fading dark spots). “Both inhibit the tyrosinase enzyme involved in pigment production,” says Jordana Herschthal, a dermatologist in Boca Raton, Florida. Although naturally occurring arbutin isn’t quite as potent as hydroquinone, it may be safer, she says. (You shouldn’t use hydroquinone when you’re pregnant or nursing.) Bearberry should help fade dark spots in about four to six weeks. Since brightening ingredients are more effective when they’re paired with a retinoid, products with both (like Allies of Skin Bright Future Overnight Facial, $114, and Dr. Dennis Gross Ferulic Acid + Retinol Brightening Solution, $88) will get you glowier, faster.

Bakuchiol

You may have heard us mention retinol, oh, once or twice. The magical ingredient has been smoothing lines, fading spots, and busting acne since before most millennials were born. Well: “Bakuchiol is like a natural version of retinol,” says cosmetic chemist Ni’Kita Wilson, who likes it in Whish Recovering Night Cream ($72). The extract comes from the babchi herb, which is used in Chinese medicine to treat skin conditions. “The data is really impressive,” says Wilson. “You get similar efficacy from bakuchiol [as retinol], without the drying side effects.” And bakuchiol is an antioxidant, so “it can be a better choice when you want both anti-aging and skin brightening,” adds cosmetic chemist Ginger King.

Pine

We’re not talking about any old evergreen. The pine that will transform skin must be the French maritime variety that grows in the Mediterranean region. Research has suggested that extract from the bark of Pinus pinaster can accelerate wound healing and reduce scar formation. “Because it offers powerful antioxidant protection from free radical damage, it’s also great for smoothing aging and photodamaged skin,” says cosmetic chemist Joseph Cincotta. (Try Perricone MD High Potency Eye Lift, $100.) If you’re concerned more about breakouts than crow’s-feet, this specific pine is also astringent and mattifies oily skin. (Try Boscia Luminizing Black Mask, $34.) When ingested — like in the supplement pycnogenol — it delivers a megadose of antioxidants to calm inflammation, protect collagen, and improve hydration levels in the skin, says Cincotta.

The Best DIYs

Laying seaweed on your face isn’t going to do anything except make you smell weird. You have to isolate botanical extracts to change your skin­ — and pulsing an avocado in a Vitamix won’t do the trick, says Graf. The exceptions: six raw ingredients that you can pick up at Whole Foods and smear right on your face for effective DIY skin care.

1. To calm breakouts: East Indian sandalwood oil is an essential oil that’s antibacterial, anti-inflammatory, and ideal for shrinking pimples, says Graf. It can be irritating if you put it directly on skin, though, so dilute one or two drops in six ounces of skin-soothing almond oil.

2. To plump wrinkles and rehab dry skin: “Rose hip–seed oil contains a natural form of retinol to help improve fine lines,” says Marius Morariu, a cofounder of Tracie Martyn skin care. Evening primrose oil is high in omega-6, which is great for severely chapped skin.

3. To get a glow: Many essential oils are too irritating to apply right on your skin, but jojoba, almond, and apricot oils are gentle and absorb easily, making them ideal for moisturizing.

Pregnancy PSA on Naturals

Many women switch to natural skin-care products when they’re pregnant or breastfeeding to avoid exposing their baby to certain synthetic — and potentially harmful — ingredients. But seeing plant extracts or essential oils on an ingredient list doesn’t guarantee safety: “There are natural ingredients, like peppermint oil, clary sage oil, rosemary oil, and juniper oil, [in bath soaks and face serums] that have been shown to cause issues with lactation and early labor,” says Herschthal, who has studied the effects of skin-care ingredients on pregnant women. If you want to use natural products when you’re pregnant, stay away from those ingredients, she says.

Your eyes will fry under normal sunglasses during 2017 eclipse, here’s why

The nation is preparing for the Aug. 21 “Great American” total solar eclipse, which is the first in 99 years to cross coast-to-coast.

That means buying special eclipse glasses because normal sun glasses – even those with the darkest lenses – aren’t enough to protect eyes from damaging rays.

It’s not that the sun is any stronger during an eclipse, but where you would squint, blink and turn away from the full sun, it can be more comfortable to look at the sun as the moon moves over the bright disk.

That doesn’t mean it’s safe. You can damage your eyes without immediately realizing it if you don’t wear eclipse glasses or look through a special eclipse viewer.

Rick Fienberg, the press officer for the American Astronomical Society, said ordinary sun glasses transmit 10 to 20 percent of the light that falls on them.

This makes the landscape on a bright sunny day easier to look at without squinting, and cuts down on glare.

Eclipse glasses allow just 0.0001 percent of the light that falls on them through.

“That’s at least 100,000 times darker than ordinary sunglasses,” Fienberg said. “Nothing can get through such glasses except the sun itself – just enough to be comfortable for viewing.”

The only time it’s safe to look at the eclipse is if you are in the path of totality and the fleeting moments when the sun is completely covered by the moon.

About 12 million people live in the path of totality for the Aug. 21 eclipse. Millions more will travel to get into the path.

“The sun can be viewed safely with the naked eye only during the few brief seconds or minutes of a total solar eclipse,” NASA says on its eclipse website. “Do not attempt to observe the partial or annular phases of any eclipse with the naked eye.”

Proper eclipse glasses are marked with ISO (International Organization for Standardization) and 12312-2.

Some older solar-viewing glasses may meet previous standards for eye protection, but not the new international standard, Fienberg said.

NASA recommends glasses from Rainbow Symphony, American Paper Optics, Thousand Oaks Optical and TSE 17.

Ralph Chou, professor emeritus at the School of Optometry & Vision Science at the University of Waterloo in Canada, told Space.com that he has seen patients with crescents burned into the back of their eyes after watching an eclipse without protection.

“Lifetime exposure to solar ultraviolet radiation is an established contributor to accelerated aging of the outer layers of the eye and skin and the development of cataracts,” Chou wrote in a Sky and Telescope article. “But more immediate damage takes place from directly observing the Sun with inadequate eye protection.”
