Investments in health research and development (R&D) are poorly aligned with global public health needs, the World Health Organisation said, highlighting that merely 1% of the total funding on health R&D was allocated towards neglected diseases like HIV , tuberculosis and malaria which account for more than 12.5% of the global disease burden.

“Investments in health R&D are still insufficiently aligned with global public health demands and needs,” the UN agency said in its as assessment which showed that high income countries had 352 times more health researchers than low income ones.

According to the Global Tuberculosis (TB) Re port-2016, India accounts for 24% of global TB cases. Six countries -India, China, Indonesia, Nigeria, Pakistan and South Africa -account for 60% of the global total. India is also the hub for multi-drug resistant TB.

India is under international pressure to tackle the national pressure to tackle the TB problem on priority , as it accounts for 1,400 of the 5,000 TB deaths daily worldwide. Though the number of deaths from the disease has come down in the past few years globally as well as in India, but with a huge rural population living with poor sanitation and poor nutrition, elimination of the disease in India looks like a distant dream.

The HIV and malaria burden is also significantly high in India. In 2015, the number of people living with HIV in India was estimated at 21.17 lakh, whereas 86,000 new HIV cases were found.

India also accounts for the highest malaria burden outside Africa. Around 7.5 lakh cases and 188 malaria deaths were recorded till September 2016. Government estimates show an investment of $18 billion is required to achieve its 2030 deadline to eliminate the disease from India.

People Who Improve Their Diets Reduce Diabetes RiskAdopting a healthier diet may lower type 2 diabetes risk over time, while a worsening diet is often accompanied by increased risk, according to a new U.S. study.

“Although recent public health recommendations have increasingly focused on advocating overall diet quality improvement, evidence has been limited on whether changing overall diet in adulthood has a long-term preventative impact on diabetes prevention in general population,” said lead author Sylvia H. Ley of the Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health and Brigham and Women’s Hospital and Harvard Medical School in Boston.

“We provide evidence that improving diet quality in adulthood is associated with type 2 diabetes prevention, while worsening diet quality is associated increased risk for diabetes,” she said by email.

The researchers analyzed data on more than 124,000 adults who did not have diabetes at the start of three large, long-term studies of lifestyle and health outcomes and who were observed for at least 20 years. Participants rated their diet quality on a healthy eating index every four years.

There were 9,361 cases of type 2 diabetes during the studies. When dietary quality scores declined by more than 10 percent between four-year surveys, diabetes risk went up by about 34 percent, the researchers found. Improving diet quality by the same amount led to a 16 percent decrease in diabetes risk.

A “healthier” diet included higher intakes of vegetables, fruits, whole grains, nuts, and legumes and lower intakes of red or processed meat, sugar-sweetened beverages and fruit juice, trans fat and sodium, as well as moderate alcohol consumption.

“Cumulative scientific evidence has supported that improving and maintaining overall quality of healthful diet is beneficial for long-term chronic disease prevention,” Ley said. “Chasing after the latest short-term fix is not likely to offer sustained benefits in the long term.”

Improving diet was associated with decreased diabetes risk regardless of how a person ate at the start of the study or how much excess weight they carried. Over time, losing weight explained some, but not all, of the change in diabetes risk, according to the results published in Diabetes Care.

“Improving overall diet quality as an adult regardless of where you start, whether you have poor or better initial diet quality, seems to be beneficial for diabetes prevention,” Ley told Reuters Health.

“It is known that Western dietary patterns and diets with high glycemic index are associated with a greater risk of developing type 2 diabetes, whereas the opposite has been observed for prudent dietary patterns and Mediterranean diets,” said Jordi Salas-Salvado of Rovira i Virgili University in Tarragona, Spain, who was not part of the new study.

“Three key points to prevent or delay the onset of type 2 diabetes are: stay lean, follow a frugal diet and include plenty and large variety of vegetables,” he told Reuters Health by email.

Diet quality, as well as body weight, are important for diabetes risk, said Dr. Marc Y. Donath of University Hospital Basel in Switzerland, who also was not part of the new study.

This price difference gives Sony a key competitive advantage, according to Piers Harding-Rolls, director and head of games at IHS Technology. Sony has sold around 36 million consoles since the PS4 launched in 2013, giving it a large market of consumers ready to adopt VR.

“When you take into account the total cost of ownership of using a PS4 as a source device, Sony’s experience is around half the price of its PC-based competition,” said Harding-Rolls in a note.

SuperData expects the low barrier of entry for these devices will lead three in four early adopters to opt for them instead.

“The real game changer in this market is Samsung Gear VR. It’s only £80 ($100 in the U.S.), and mobile first, which makes it multifunctional and easy to distribute content to,” said Maks Fus Mickiewicz, senior researcher at The Future Laboratory.

“Samsung is developing an immersive VR world which keeps users locked in. For example, people can browse the web using voice-recognition technology or hyper-intuitive Gaze Mode, which uses eye-tracking software to confirm selections.”

According to Mickiewicz, the market for VR will be split between hardcore gamers and casual consumers.

“Hardcore gamers will wait for a device that’s proven to deliver true, fully immersive VR,” he explained. “The second, the casual market, will go for the dead cheap, easy to use version. But the future is undoubtedly a hybrid that delivers both.”
