‘Our business just exploded’: All eyes on thriving store

VISION: Diana Ward, from the Optical Superstore in Riverlink, has considerable experience in the industry.

ACCORDING to a recent Roy Morgan Research report, 58%of Australians wear prescription glasses and on average replace them every two and half years.

It seems the older we get, the more we need to wear glasses.

One local business, Optical Superstore Ipswich, assists locals with all of their optical needs.

Diana and David Ward have been in business since 2002, moving from the Ipswich City Mall to Riverlink and in their third move are now located opposite Coles in the Riverlink Shopping Centre. “Coming into Riverlink was our best move we ever did, a lot more foot traffic and our business just exploded,” co-owner/operator David Ward said.

The husband and wife duo has considerable experience in the industry. Mr Ward worked in Melbourne, the home of the Optical Superstore.

“I am an optical mechanic, I did my apprenticeship in this and I am trained to make lenses and fitting them into frames.

“This particular role is now gone, replaced by computers. I went on to become an optical dispenser,” he said.

Diana is a qualified optical dispenser studying for the position during a four-year course. Starting out as a receptionist in a laboratory, where the two worked together, she moved to selling frames to retailers.

The complementary skills of the pair means customers are the beneficiary of their considerable knowledge and skill.

Optical Superstore is an Australian-owned and operated business.

“When I worked for them they only franchised to people known to the owner,” he said. “I had a young family and wanted to move back to Ipswich and I asked if he would support me opening a store here. He was happy to do that.”

In this highly competitive business, Optical Superstore Ipswich prides itself on offering the latest in technology for eye examination.

“We try to buy Australian-made frames and stock other international brands. In fact, we have well over 600 frames on display in our store.”

Two optometrists, Alison and Emma, are instore six days a week. Bookings can be made from Monday to Saturday, with appointments until 5pm on Saturday and 7pm on Thursday.

“I will go out of my way to assist our customers – that’s what others will not do. For example, I will do prescription diving masks, people don’t think of that.

“I also do a lot of individual safety glasses that are prescription and certified,” Mr Ward said.

While consumers are more aware of their eye health, it seems there is an increase in young people needing prescription glasses due to constantly being on smart devices without taking breaks.

Optical Superstore Ipswich are providers for Veteran Affairs clients and work with all major health funds for hi-caps claims. Mr and Mrs Ward operate a very successful and customer-oriented business, dedicated to continue to support the local community.

eprom microchip supermacro

Computer scientists in Singapore and Germany have collaborated to create a resistive RAM chip that not only stores data but can act as a computer processor.

The breakthrough uses state-of-the-art memory chips known as Redox-based, resistive switching random access memory (ReRAM) and could lead to much faster and thinner mobile devices. Today’s computers must transfer data from the memory storage to the processor unit for computation, which along with slowing performance also requires more power.

“This is like having a long conversation with someone through a tiny translator, which is a time-consuming and effort-intensive process,” said Anupam Chattopadhyay, an assistant professor at Nanyang Technological University (NTU) in Singapore. “We are now able to increase the capacity of the translator, so it can process data more efficiently.”

While the new circuit saves time and energy by eliminating data transfers between disparate storage and processors, it can also boost the speed of  processors found in laptops and mobile devices by at least two times or more, the researchers said.

By making the memory chip perform computing tasks, space can be saved by eliminating the processor, leading to thinner, smaller and lighter electronics. The discovery could also lead to new design possibilities for consumer electronics and wearable technology, the researcher said.

NTU researchers worked with others from Germany’s RWTH Aachen University and Forschungszentrum Juelich to create the new memory chips. Their research was published in the peer reviewed journal Scientific Reports.

Also known as memristor, the ReRAM came from global chipmakers such as SanDisk and Panasonic. ReRAM chips are one of the fastest memories on the market and are already commercially available for IoT applications. In 2015, Hewlett-Packard and SanDisk also announced an agreement to jointly develop “Storage Class Memory” (SCM) ReRAM that could replace DRAM and would be 1,000 times faster than NAND flash.

Until memristor, researchers knew of only three basic circuit elements—the resistor, the capacitor and the inductor. Memristor added a fourth, which consumed far less energy than previous technologies.

While ReRAM has been under development for many years as a storage technology, NTU’s Chattopadhyay, in collaboration with Professor Rainer Waser from RWTH Aachen University and Vikas Rana from Forschungszentrum Juelich, demonstrated for the first time how it could also process data.

“The quest for faster processing is one of the most pressing needs for industries worldwide, as computer software is getting increasingly complex while data centers have to deal with more information than ever,” the researchers stated in a news release.

How the ReRAM works

Computer processors today use the binary system where bits of data are represented as either a 0 or a 1. For example, the letter A will be processed and stored as 01000001, an 8-bit character.

However, the prototype ReRAM circuit built by Chattopadhyay and the other researchers processes data in three states instead of two. For example, it can store and process data as 0, 1 or 2, known as the Ternary number system.

“Because ReRAM uses different electrical resistance to store information, it could be possible to store the data in an even higher number of states, hence speeding up computing tasks beyond current limitations,” the researchers stated.

The researchers plan to develop the ReRAM to process more than its current three states, which will lead to even greater improvements of computing speeds.

Using ReRAM for computing will be more cost-effective than other bleeding-edge computing technologies on the horizon, since ReRAMs will be available in the market soon.

“Using them not only for data storage but also for computation could open a completely new route towards an effective use of energy in the information technology,” Waser stated.

Call of Duty: Infinite Warfare on Windows Store won’t let you play with Steam gamers

call of duty infinite warfare

Continuing the trend of “Windows Store versions being demonstrably worse than their Steam counterparts,” Activision’s put out some disturbing news about Call of Duty: Infinite Warfare—namely, that the Windows Store version isn’t cross-play compatible with either the Steam version or the Xbox version.

Wait, what? I thought the big draw for games in the Windows Store was making Xbox and Windows 10 could play well together? Not here, apparently, because while Microsoft’s platforms support cross-play, it’s not required. Call of Duty: Infinite Warfare isn’t an Xbox Play Anywhere title (meaning your PC purchase doesn’t transfer to the Xbox) and the multiplayer communities won’t have any contact. Nor, more disturbingly, can you see your fellow keyboard-and-mouse brethren playing through Steam.

On the game’s FAQ, two similarly worded questions read “Can I play Call of Duty: Infinite Warfare or Call of Duty: Modern Warfare Remastered for Windows 10 on Windows Store with my friends that are playing on Xbox One/another PC platform?” The answer, in both cases, is “No, you can only play these titles with other users of Windows 10 on Windows Store.”

I’ll keep it simple: Don’t buy Call of Duty: Infinite Warfare through the Windows Store. Get your PC copy literally anywhere else. This is a ridiculous constraint, and whether it’s the fault of Activision or Microsoft or just a limitation of the Windows Store’s sandboxed universal Windows platform format, the consumer is getting screwed.

Windows Central received a statement from Microsoft that says “We support cross-play between devices and platforms for partners who want to enable it.” That makes it sound like this befuddling, deal-breaking multiplayer restriction is Activision’s fault, but there’s enough wiggle room that it doesn’t really rule out it being a limitation of UWP itself.

Regardless, Call of Duty’s PC presence is already minimal compared to consoles, and the number of people buying through the Windows Store instead of Steam is undoubtedly even smaller. With no cross-play, the Windows Store-specific multiplayer community is a niche subset of an already small group, and it’s going to dry up faster than a puddle in the Sahara.

A chinese regulator is said to have ordered Apple to shut down its iBooks keep and iTunes films only six months after the offerings were released within the country.

The movement towards Apple in a rustic, which it costs as its 2d largest market with the aid of revenueafter the U.S., came from the kingdom administration of Press, ebook, Radio, film and tv, suggested Thethe big apple times, quoting two humans who spoke on the circumstance of anonymity.

U.S. tech businesses have been below pressure to conform with chinese net policies and censorship, with a few internet services like facebook and Twitter blocked inside the u . s ..

but Apple has had more achievement in negotiating this marketplace, which became meditated in itslaunch in February of its Apple Pay provider in tandem with financial institution card community China UnionPay, no matter competition from local players like Alipay.

The contemporary incident will now not have any on the spot impact on Apple’s tool sales due to the fact both iBooks store and iTunes movies had been launched only some months again, and chinesecustomers have many opportunity platforms they can flip to, stated Tay Xiaohan, senior market analyst at IDC China.

The close down of the services may want to, however, affect the relationship among Apple and thechinese language government, Tay said. There can also be a bigger impact inside the long time ifgreater Apple offerings are blocked, such as Apple Pay, which play a important element in locking Applecustomers into its ecosystem, the analyst brought.

the 2 Apple offerings were close down closing week, however an Apple spokeswoman told NYT in aassertion that the the corporation hopes “to make books and films available once more to our customersin China as quickly as feasible.”

Apple did now not straight away touch upon the closure of the offerings. The chinese regulator couldn’tbe immediately contacted.

The business enterprise’s phone enterprise had a strong fourth sector in China. It shipped a record 15.5million iPhones, and ranked 1/3 in the market with a 13 percentage market percentage, strategy Analyticsstated in January. The corporation become helped by way of extending its retailer coverage throughoutthe usa and via Apple song and different localized services, the research company said.
