I Tried A Diet And Fitness Plan Based On My DNA And Couldn’t Believe The Results

My name is Daysha, and I have always struggled with my weight.

Growing up, my weight fluctuated a lot. At one point in my life, I developed disordered eating habits. After recovering and practicing a lot of self-love, I found the problem then became that I never saw the same results that I did when I was starving myself.

It’s not that I don’t enjoy working out and eating healthy, because I do.

I love cooking healthy meals and I dance four to five times per week. I have always been frustrated with why it's so hard for me to lose weight. I tried all sorts of methods to lose weight and get fit, including a raw vegan diet, Weight Watchers, seeing a dietitian, doing a soup cleanse, P90X, and even getting a personal trainer. Nothing seemed to work for me.

I started to believe that maybe it’s just my genetics.

Not ever seeing results discouraged me so much to the point that I wanted to just give up. It turned into a continuous cycle of embarking on a new diet or fitness plan, not seeing any real change after a few months, and then just giving up again.

Not ever seeing results discouraged me so much to the point that I wanted to just give up. It turned into a continuous cycle of embarking on a new diet or fitness plan, not seeing any real change after a few months, and then just giving up again.

Then I found out about this thing called FitnessGenes and took a DNA test.

FitnessGenes is a genetic testing company that develops personalized fitness and nutrition plans based on an individual's DNA. I met with Dr. Dan Reardon, the CEO/cofounder, and took a DNA test. The results took one month to process. When I finally got them back, I was shocked.

I sat down with Dr. Dan to learn more about my genetics and how my body works. Here’s what I learned:

1. My suspicion was correct. Genetically, I do have a slower metabolism. Dr. Dan described this in scientific terms as an "efficient metabolism," meaning that I store energy more than someone with a fast or "inefficient metabolism." 2. I also have a gene variation for the FTO gene that is linked to a hormone called ghrelin, which controls hunger. My gene variation implies that I am someone who becomes hungry very easily, therefore creating a higher risk of overeating. Dan said that eating small, frequent meals throughout the day to control hunger would be important. 3. I also have a gene variation in the APOA2 gene, indicating that I am sensitive to saturated fats, meaning that it sticks to me more easily! I asked Dr. Dan what foods have saturated fats and he said things like animal products, butter, dairy products, palm oil, and coconut oil. Coconut oil?! I ate so much coconut oil because of how often it's promoted as a healthy oil. No wonder I was having trouble.4. I am someone who would benefit from working out later in the day because my CLOCK gene variations imply that I am a night owl. This made perfect sense because I am definitely not a morning person.5. I am someone who responds well to "high-volume training," meaning high sets and reps of weight training. I always thought that lots of cardio would be the key to losing weight. It turns out that it was going to take a lot of strength training. Dan said that the more muscle I built, the more fat I would burn. 6. I am someone who does not switch from burning carbohydrates to burning fat easily. This would mean that I would need to be eating the right balance of macronutrients: carbs, protein and fat.7. Dan also said that I have a gene variation that indicates I metabolize caffeine slowly. This means that I would benefit by having a cup of green tea about 30 minutes prior to a workout for optimal energy.

Instead of counting calories, I tracked my macronutrients.

Dan said it would be important to have 1,700–1,900 calories maximum per day, since I am someone with a slow metabolism. However, instead of counting calories, which had put me in a negative headspace in the past, I tracked my macronutrients every day using this whiteboard. Macronutrient breakdown Carbohydrates: 40% Protein: 30% Fat: 30% (less than 8% coming from saturated fats, and the main source coming from monounsaturated fats. This would include foods such as almonds, olive oil, avocado, sesame oil, and canola oil.)

I learned how to create meals that were delicious and healthy for my body.

The 30-day plan was easy to follow, but it did take a lot of hard work.

I worked out with Dan three to four times per week doing strength training and high-intensity interval training (HIIT). I had two active recovery days and also took a brisk walk every morning. Yes, there were times when I wanted to quit, but I felt stronger and stronger as the time went by. It motivated me even more to continue.

I couldn’t have done it without a strong support system.

I was lucky enough to have friends who were invested in me and seeing me succeed. They were even willing to work out with me!

After 30 days, I could not believe the results!

I didn't weigh myself the entire 30 days, because I didn't want to be discouraged by the numbers. Instead, I focused on how I was feeling. I had more energy than I have ever had before! In the end, it really wasn't about the numbers for me. I just wanted to be the healthiest, happiest version of myself.

Although I lost weight and body fat, it was never about the numbers for me. I came out of this experience a different person on the inside, and that is what matters to me the most.

This experience allowed me to trust my body more than I ever have. I realized that I was always caught in this mindset that I was somehow "broken," and that nothing would ever work for me. In reality, I just needed to learn more about my body and how I function as an individual. We live in a culture where everyone is trying to tell you what's healthy, and this gave me the peace of mind to know what's actually healthy for my own body. This is only the beginning for me!

CBSE won’t apply its 3 Indian language plan for Class 10 Board exam till 2020

A senior official said that “even if the new plan is approved by the ministry and CBSE starts working on the scheme it would not” happen before 2019-20.

  • Congress MP raises issue of student suicide in RS
  • NEET UG 2017 Urdu Row: Students organisation to file petition in SC
  • Civil aviation ministry approved mechanical and avionics aircraft courses
  • Maharashtra textbook dowry shocker: Will correct it, not in power when syllabus framed, says Education Minister
  • Why is CBSE removing its international curriculum?

In a sigh of relief for all board students and their parents, the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) has recently come up with a new plan (three-language formula) for Class 10 Board examination.

(Read: Why is CBSE removing its international curriculum?)

According to a new proposal, if a student is currently studying in Class 7 or above, need not worry about shifting to schools affiliated to CBSE where three-language formula is applicable.

Here’s why:

  • It is speculated that the government has decided this keeping in view the schedule of students studying in the current academic session and does not want to disturb them.

(Read: CBSE Class 10 Board exams to get compulsory, official notification released at cbse.nic.in)

When did the proposal of three-language formula come in?

  • Last year, in December, CBSE had sent the proposed three-language formula for secondary education to Human Resource Development (HRD) Ministry, clearing all the doubts over it and when the new scheme would be implemented
  • As per sources, there were differences in the existing three-language formula of CBSE and the proposed scheme:
    1. The scheme extends till Class 10
    2. It will not include foreign languages as one of the options for students.

Key notes of the new plan:

  • In the new plan, candidates are required to take up three Indian languages listed in schedule VIII of the Constitution, one of which could be English
  • The three languages would be main subjects in the Class 10 board exams
  • Also, students can study a foreign language, or a non-listed Indian language, as an additional subject, which will be non-qualifying in nature.

According to a senior HRD official, even if the new plan is approved by the ministry and CBSE starts working on the scheme it would not “happen before 2019-20”.

“When the scheme is implemented will depend on the how soon the policy is finalised. Once the policy is framed, the schools would need to be given time as under this formula a student will get the option of 22 languages, for which teachers need to be appointed,” said  CBSE official in recent TOI report.

Intel pursues Moore’s Law with plan to make first 7-nm chips this year

Credit: Intel

Intel’s next big Moore’s Law advance will be a 7-nm pilot plant it is establishing this year to explore the upcoming manufacturing process.

The chipmaker announced it was establishing the pilot plant during an earnings call on Thursday.

For decades, Moore’s Law has been the guiding light for Intel to make teenier, faster, and more power-efficient chips. The effort has helped PC makers continuously shrink laptops and mobile devices while adding longer battery life.

Intel is trying to hang onto the long-standing observation as a way to push its chip technology forward. However, some experts argue Moore’s Law is expiring as it becomes physically impossible to cram more features on smaller chips.

The pilot plant will test and iron out kinks in manufacturing 7-nm chips. Intel hasn’t said when it’ll start shipping 7-nm chips in volume, but it won’t be in the next two to three years.

“The pilot line is about figuring out how to make billions of chips,” said Dean McCarron, principal analyst at Mercury Research.

The pilot plant has limited production, but it sets the stage for Intel to invest billions in larger factories to make smaller 7-nm chips.

“Once they have the process locked down, it’s replicated in the other plants,” McCarron said.

Intel’s latest chips, based on Kaby Lake, are made using the 14-nanometer process, and the company is now moving to 10-nm with its upcoming Cannonlake chip, which was shown in a PC at CES earlier this month. The 7-nm chips will come after the 10-nm process.

Cannonlake chips will ship in small volumes by year-end, and their availability will expand next year, Intel CEO Brian Krzanich said during the earnings call.

Moore’s Law has also helped Intel roll out new chips on a yearly basis like clockwork. Intel first interpreted Moore’s Law as a way to double the number of transistors in chips every 18 to 24 months, which doubles performance.

But that interpretation didn’t work on the 14-nm process, where it became a challenge to cram more transistors in smaller geometries. Intel dealt with embarrassing product delays and had to move away from its decades-old schedule of advancing the manufacturing process every two years.

Intel also broke away from its history of making two new chip technologies with each manufacturing cycle. It made three new chip technologies — Broadwell, Skylake, and Kaby Lake — with the 14-nm process.

The chipmaker now isn’t worried about doubling the transistor count with every new chip generation. Instead, Intel is now interpreting Moore’s Law more in line with the economics related to cost-per-transistor, which would drop with scaling. That’s an important part of Moore’s Law.

Intel last year said it was trying to get back to a two-year manufacturing cycle with the 7-nm process, but with smarter chip designs.

The 7-nm process could bring radical design changes to chips, which will be much smaller and power efficient. Intel’s planning on using exotic III-V materials like gallium-nitride for faster chips that could bring laptops longer battery life.

Intel is looking at the 7-nm process to alleviate some of the challenges it faces on the 14-nm and 10-nm processors. The company has hinted it would introduce EUV (extreme ultraviolet) tools in the manufacturing process. EUV will help etch finer features on chips, but its implementation has been delayed multiple times.

The pilot factory will help validate all those features, and then allow Intel to order equipment for the new factories, McCarron said.

Competitors like Globalfoundries and Samsung are getting a head-start on the 7-nm process. Globalfoundries has said it will start making 7-nm chips by 2018, and ARM has released tools for the design of 7-nm chips. It’s not clear if Globalfoundries will do 7-nm test runs or start making chips in large volumes.

Samsung and Globalfoundries have just started making 10-nm chips like Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 835, which will appear in smartphones soon.

Globalfoundries is a close partner with IBM, which produced the first 7-nm chips last year.

Is China’s future-ready plan better?

Had the graded response action plan been in place in 2016, the city would have seen the odd-even scheme just five times over 19 days. Similarly , other “emergency” interventions, including a blanket ban on construction activities, would have scarcely been implemented. In contrast, if Beijing’s system were to be implemented in Delhi, the red alert (most severe) would have covered 78 days in the year. This is because the Chinese city’s system is far more stringent and mainly relies on smog forecasts, instead of actual recorded concentrations. This, according to some experts, helps Beijing prevent, or quickly tide over, very severe pollution episodes.

Greenpeace’s air quality campaigners recently analysed how Beijing and Delhi’s alert systems would play out in 2016 using R Studio -an open source data analytics software. They sourced daily average PM2.5 (fine, respirable pollution particles) and PM10 (coarse pollution particles) data from CPCB for 2016.Delhi would have had 67 “severe” and 110 “very poor” days, as specified in the graded response action plan.

While experts welcomed the graded response action plan, being enforced by the SC mandated Environment Pollution Control Authority in Delhi NCR, a lag of 48 hours in declaring “emergency” could reduce its impact and might allow the worst to pass before it came into force, they said.

Lauri Myllyvirta, senior air pollution campaigner, said: “A delay of 48 hours to initiate the response and, presumably at least 24 hours more before the measures start to have a significant impact, is an issue. As severe smog events take at least 48 hours to build up, the measures should be in effect at least two days before, not two days after the pollution levels peak.” On three out of five occasions, the response would only have been initiated after the worst peak had already passed, added Myllyvirta.

In fact, based on the analysis, he suggested that emergency response could be maintained over the winter months continuously when pollution levels were high. “If measures are relaxed as soon as PM levels fall from emergency to, say , severe, this can render the interventions ineffective.”

Unlike Delhi where the high pollution months are clearly identifiable, in Beijing the levels are variable through the year. Beijing revised its alert system recently based on its experience of previous winters.

Its system is entirely based on forecast or smog predictions now -for example, a red alert is issued as soon as air pollution forecasts show four continuous days of heavy pollution, of which two days may have severe pollution. The same method was followed last December when Beijing had a red alert for seven days. “Most of China’s city-level response plans use forecast or predicted pollution scenarios as criteria. To make a forecast reliable, China’s ministry of environment protection and bureau of meteorology have been advancing the technical mechanism, including an emission inventory ,” said Linsai Dong, climate and energy campaigner in Beijing.

Beijing issued two red alerts each in 2015 and 2016, which according to its environmental bureau’s analysis, reduced 30% of local emissions, added Linsai. “Red alerts in 2016 have been sent in a more organised way -when the ministry of environment protection predicted that the re will be an severe and longlasting smog episodes in December, it sent pre-warnings to the municipalities, including Beijing, notifying the predicted air pollution episodes and encouraging red alerts,” she said.

A CPCB official told TOI, “As of now, the plan is to introduce emergency response only when we have 48-hour emergency levels. People are worried about a November 2016-like smog episode when levels shoot through the roof. But we feel that was a one-off. We are also working on forecasts and have partnered IMD to make predictions robust.”

He also said that the graded response action plan meant to prevent an emergency episode altogether.

Delhi’s action plan for “severe” air days involves closing brick kilns and hot-mix plants, intensifying use of public transport, introducing differential rates during off-peak hours and mechanised cleaning of roads. In “very poor” days, it mandates a ban on the use of diesel generator sets and imposing a hike in parking fee by three to four times.

‘Trojan Horse’ Antibody Plan Shows Promise Against Ebola Viruses

'Trojan Horse' Antibody Plan Shows Promise Against Ebola Viruses

LONDON: Scientists have found a hidden weak spot shared by all five known types of the deadly Ebola virus and successfully targeted it with two antibodies which blocked its ability to invade human cells.

In early stage laboratory experiments published in the journal Science, the researchers developed a “Trojan Horse” strategy that allows engineered antibodies to hitch a ride on Ebola to where the virus is most vulnerable before hitting it.

“The success in co-opting the virus itself to dispatch a lethal weapon … marks a turning point in development of smart therapeutics against infectious diseases,” said M. Javad Aman, a scientist and president at the U.S. biotech firm Integrated BioTherapeutics who worked on the team.

Although years of testing lie ahead before any fully approved treatment might be developed for Ebola patients, Aman said similar strategies could also be devised against several other viral and bacterial pathogens.

Ebola is an extremely deadly and contagious disease for which there are currently no regulator-approved vaccines or treatments. A vast outbreak of the Zaire strain of the virus, which causes haemorrhagic fever, killed more than 11,000 people and infected around 29,000 in West Africa in 2014-2015.
Monoclonal antibodies, which bind to and neutralise specific pathogens and toxins, have emerged as the most promising treatments for Ebola. But a critical problem is that most antibody therapies – including the most promising experimental therapy, ZMapp – target only one specific Ebola virus.

In this work, the research team found a way around this by targeting a weak spot – in the so-called lysosome of the cell – to where antibodies could hitch a ride on Ebola and deliver a punch that blocked the virus’ exit and ability to replicate.

The strategy could eventually be developed for use in a range of other viruses, the scientists said, including cousins of Ebola such as Marburg, and other viral diseases such as dengue or Lassa.

“It’s impossible to predict where the next Ebola virus outbreak will occur or which virus will cause it,” said Jon Lai of the Albert Einstein College of Medicine in the United States, who co-led the work.

“We hope that further testing in non-human primates will establish our antibodies as safe and effective for treating those exposed to any Ebola virus.”

How to Clear Your Credit Card Debts with Debt Management Plan

Image result for How,to,Clear,Your,Credit,Card,Debts,with,Debt,Management,Plan
Debt management plan is a plan designed to make paying back the debt more manageable and affordable for you. You can join a DMP program if you feel that you are unable to cope with your debt anymore or you have already fallen behind in your payment. The DMP provider will negotiate with the creditor on your behalf to get him to reduce the interest charges. If you continue to make repayment to your creditor in the traditional way, you will find that your balance is not reducing as you make payment because all the payment you make will go towards the interest fees.

The DMP provider will get your creditor to cancel all the fees such as late fees that are charged to your account. He will review all your finance including all sources of revenues as well as outgoing expenses. After reviewing your expenses, they will create a plan with a suitable monthly payment that you can afford realistically. When you join a DMP, you will be agreeing not to open new credit cards. By signing the agreement, you also agree that you won’t sign up for any new loan. You will be declined if you try to apply for new credit card or loan while in the debt management program. Your creditor will not allow you to get anymore credit card or new loan. This is because he wants you to quickly pay off the loan after having lower your interest rate and eliminate the fees.

You can decide how many credit card accounts you want to put in the DMP program. You can keep one of your credit cards and get the remaining credit cards into the program to leverage your credit score. The card that you choose to leave out of the program should have a low balance and that you must be able to cope with the repayment. Normally, it takes 4 – 5 years to pay off a DMP plan. You will only be making a single repayment to the DMP provider who will then distribute the funds to the creditors. There is a fee that you will get charged for the debt management services. The fee is about 15% of the total debt amount that you owe your credit card company. If you want to learn how debt management program works, please click here.

It is important to choose a company that is a member of a respected organization as this can give you an assurance that they are a legit company. You should avoid dealing with a DMP firm that ask you for sensitive information such as credit card number on the phone. Once you have completed the DMP program, you can apply for new credit card and loan again. The same credit card companies where you have paid off the credit cards may send you offers. By joining the DMP program, you will be able to learn how to manage your finance more responsibly. If you do apply for new cards again, make sure you pay back on time so that you won’t make the same mistake and fall behind on payment again.

JNU scholars plan to revive colleges hooked up by using Dr. BR Ambedkar

The ‘political college‘ envisaged and founded by using Dr. BR Ambedkar have gained a few attention fromJawaharlal Nehru University scholars. The two students, Shivshankar Das and Kshipra Uike plan on reviving the college.

The two pupils have completed their PhD from JNU and are campaigning in Nagpur for over a yr now
The 2 have started consulting ‘intellectuals’ to re-establish the political faculty.
Das who completed his PhD in Political Technology gave the subsequent inputs about the schools:

One in all the faculties installed in 1956 had 15 college students in its first batch
The school closed within the identical yr alas, after Dr Ambedkar’s demise
The school ran for handiest eight months and became looking for an excellent most important then
The objective of the school became to teach upcoming political leaders through inculcating Buddhist outlook in them
Training and equipping individuals with parliamentary legislative processes and behaviour became thefaculty‘s goal.
“The over-enthusiastic politicians underestimated and unnoticed his notion of political college. Because thetime passed, neither any faction of the RPI, nor some other political groups including Bahujan Samaj Party(BSP) valued or observed it in any way,” Ms. Uike (the JNU student) said.

More advertisers plan to spend less on Twitter: Mahaney

As if Twitter needed another problem, a recent survey suggests advertisers are souring on the social media platform.

Advertiser interest in Twitter began cresting early last year, but the latest survey by RBC Capital Markets found a significant jump in the number of advertisers who plan to decrease their spending on the website.

According to the survey, 23 percent of Twitter advertisers plan to decrease spending, while 32 percent plan to increase spending.

“There’s a real negative tell in here,” RBC lead Internet analyst Mark Mahaney told CNBC’s “Squawk Alley” on Wednesday. “Just like there are momentum stock buyers, guess what? There are momentum ad buyers, and the momentum is moving away from Twitter.”

In the fourth quarter, Twitter’s advertising revenue rose 48 percent year over year to $641 million, below Wall Street’s expectation of $647.7 million, according to StreetAccount.

Twitter has faced scrutiny from investors as its user numbers stagnate, leaving Wall Street to wonder where future revenue growth will come from. Shares of Twitter are down more than 23 percent year to date.

The survey, conducted twice a year, asks about 2,000 advertisers to rank companies by return on investment, or the ability to directly track ad dollars spent on a platform to a purchase of some sort.

The top performers by a wide margin are Google parent Alphabet andFacebook, Mahaney said.

The improvement in return on investment for No. 2-ranked Facebook in the latest survey was nonetheless surprising, Mahaney said. As Facebook’s ad prices increase, RBC has been on the watch for a correction in ROI, but 59 percent of the survey respondents report their ROI on Facebook is growing, he said.

The single largest loser in the migration to the Web is print media, and an increasing percentage of ad spending is being diverted from television budgets.

About 40 percent of advertisers pointed to money previously allocated to television as a source of funds for Internet advertising, up from 37 percent a year ago and 25 percent a year and a half ago, Mahaney said.

Among the types of companies that focus on Internet advertising are transactions, commerce and travel companies, Mahaney added. Brand advertisers have yet to fully migrate to the Web, he said, but Facebook’s introduction autoplay ads is drawing them to online platforms.
