Plex’s new Amazon Echo support lets you control your home theater with your voice

Plex is getting into the home automation game. The popular media management software just announced it now has an Alexa skill, as well as smart home features that turns off the lights or post a message in Slack based on an action you take with Plex.

The new Alexa skill is available now in the US and UK Alexa stores. Once you’ve activated the Plex skill, you can ask your Alexa to play content from your local media library on demand, such as a movie or a television episode from a specific season. Not sure what you’re in the mood for? You can also ask Alexa and Plex (Plexa?) to suggest music or something to watch.

Plex doesn’t specifically say this, but it appears the Alexa skill is open to all users, not just Plex Pass subscribers.

Get smart

That said, the company is also adding an interesting new feature for Plex Pass users called Webhooks. Basically, what this means is that when you take an action with Plex, a secondary action can be carried out by a computer.

If you start a movie in Plex, for example, you could use Plex’s Webhooks feature to automatically dim the living room lights. Right now, Plex is hoping to get developers to start adding Webhooks that integrate with Plex.

The impact on you at home: There are three examples on Github that you can try out right now, including desktop notifications for music playback, automated Slack posts when you rate something in Plex, and a smart light integration with the Wink Hub.

These integrations are useful, but they’ll require some knowledge of JavaScript meaning it’s probably out of the grasp of most users, and that may not change. Plex’s technical documentation for Webhooks says they are a “fairly advanced feature and won’t commonly be used by an ‘average’ user.” Plex Pass Pro customers may be able to get an installer to come to their home and set Webhooks up, however.

Google Home gets smarter with Belkin WeMo and Honeywell thermostat support

google home chromecast

Google Home is bumping up its smart home capabilities to better compete with Amazon’s Echo lineup. The search giant just announced that you can now use Home to turn on Belkin WeMo products such as smart plugs and light switches. Google Home is also supporting Honeywell thermostats for those times you need to turn up the heat without getting off your chair.

The new Home features should be available now. You can check by opening the Google Home app on your phone. Click the “hamburger” menu icon in the upper left corner, and then tap on Home control. Finally, tap the plus sign at the bottom right of the next screen to add a new device. Honeywell and WeMo should be listed there if the updated features are available to you.

The impact on you at home: While the Home smart speaker is the vehicle for Google’s efforts in the smart home space, the “magic” of Home is Google Assistant. That same digital personal assistant is built into the Pixel smartphone, which Google says is also getting Home Control features “soon.” In other words, you should soon be able to control all of the same smart home products from your phone via Google Assistant. Currently Google Home Control supports Nest, Philips Hue, and SmartThings in addition to Honeywell and WeMo.

Some of the best experiences Google Home has to offer right now come from its integration with IFTTT. You can, for example, use IFTTT to have Google Assistant create a post on Facebook or turn off the TV via Logitech Harmony remotes. At the time of this writing there didn’t appear to be any special recipes using Honeywell or Belkin, but that will probably change in the coming weeks.

Vizio adds Google Home support to its SmartCast TVs and home audio gear

smartcast p series ultra hd high dynamic range home theater display w tablet remote hero

In 2016, Vizio was big on building Google Cast support (the underpinnings of Chromecast) into its TVs, home theater displays, soundbars, and wireless speakers via the SmartCast line.

For 2017, Vizio’s adding Google Home compatibility. Instead of casting media from a phone or tablet (like a sucker!) Vizio owners can now verbally order Google Home to play music from Spotify on the living room speakers, or start binge-watching Netflix’s The Crown in the den.

The new functionality is available now on Vizio’s SmartCast E-, M-, and P-Series televisions and home theater displays, as well as the company’s home theater sound bars and wireless speakers.

Home integration allows for a variety of voice controls for anyone who owns Google’s smart speaker and a Vizio SmartCast device. You can, for example, adjust the volume, start or stop playing music, as well as skip or repeat a music track. Video controls for Netflix are similar, including the ability to rewind a video or skip to the next episode in a series.

Vizio has also added the ability to power on displays and TVs via Google Home using the Quick Start Power Mode—a user-activated feature that will eat up a little more power than regular standby. Let’s say you wanted to play Netflix’s Narcos on the upstairs TV. Using the command, “Okay, Google Play Narcos upstairs” would not only start the show on that TV but also activate the television.

The story behind the story: While Quick Start Power Mode is a nice-sounding feature, most people with a newer television set can do this just with a regular Chromecast and Google Home. Newer TVs usually come with a feature called HDMI-CEC (HDMI Consumer Electronics Control) that lets connected devices such as Chromecast have limited control of the television set. When CEC is enabled for the Chromecast’s HDMI port the TV can be turned on or switch to the correct input via Google Home or casting from a smartphone.

Android TV home screen bloat and how to fix it

When I reviewed the Xiaomi Mi Box last week, one of my complaints was about the layout of the home screen. Instead of having just one section for all your apps, the Mi Box splits your app library in two, with a separate section of “Mi Box Recommends” apps that can’t be customized.

This isn’t the first time I’ve run into this problem. Last year’s Nvidia Shield Android TV, which runs the same operating system from Google, also has a separate row just for Nvidia’s pre-installed gaming apps and Netflix. As with the Mi Box, there’s no way to move those apps around.

Fortunately, there are ways to take control of your home screen on the Xiaomi Mi Box, Nvidia Shield Android TV, and Google Nexus Player. They’re just hidden out of sight from the average user. Here’s what you can do:

Xiaomi Mi Box: removing the “Mi Box Recommends” row

Getting rid of Xiaomi’s bloatware first requires a settings tweak:

  • Go to Settings
  • Under the Device heading, select Apps
  • Under the System apps heading, scroll to and select XiaomiLeanbackCustomizer
  • Select Disable, then select OK

Removing this row doesn’t get rid of the apps themselves, it simply moves them to the main app section so that everything’s in one place. To remove these apps completely, you launch them first, as this takes you to the Google Play Store to complete the installation. After this step, uninstall the apps through Settings > Apps or through the Google Play Store, and the icons should disappear. (Thanks to Android Box Reviews for the tip.)

Nvidia Shield Android TV: removing the “Shield Hub” row

The weirdest thing about the Nvidia Shield Android TV is how it relegates the Netflix app to the same row as Nvidia’s own gaming services. If this bothers you as much as it bothers me, follow these steps for relief:

  • Go to Settings
  • Under the Device heading, select Apps
  • Under the System apps heading, scroll to and select Nvidia Customizations
  • Select Notifications, then select Off

When you return to the home screen, both Netflix and the Shield Hub app will appear inside the main apps section. You can press and hold the “A” button on those apps to rearrange the icons.

There’s just one downside: Launching the Shield Hub takes you straight to Nvidia’s GeForce Now cloud gaming service, with no apparent way to access GameStream (for in-home streaming from a PC) or Nvidia’s native game store.

Extreme measure: Set a new default launcher

If you’re still unhappy with the Android TV home screen—for instance, you don’t like the Recommendations row, or don’t want your games and apps separated, you can install an alternative home screen launcher.

Alternative home screen launchers for Android TV provide more freedom to customize.

With Android 6.0, Google made this a lot harder on Android TV devices. Even if you install an alternative launcher like HALauncher or TVLauncher, there’s no built-in way to set them as the default. Fortunately, there is a workaround, discovered by the XDA developer forums. All you need is a laptop and USB cable, and it doesn’t even require rooting your device:

  • Install your alternative launcher of choice
  • On your PC, download and install Minimal ADB and Fastboot
  • Nvidia Shield owners may need to install Shield Open Source drivers on the PC, though this shouldn’t be necessary in Windows 10
  • On your Android TV device, go to Settings
  • Under the Device heading, select About
  • Scroll down to Build, and press the “A” button eight times. (A message will tell you that you are now a developer.)
  • Return to the main Settings menu
  • Under the Preferences heading, select Developer options
  • Select Debugging, then select USB Debugging, then select On
  • Connect the Android TV device to the PC with a USB cable
  • On the Android TV device, approve the connection
  • On the PC, launch Minimal ADB and Fastboot
  • In the command prompt, type adb devices
  • Verify that a device is detected (it should appear as a string of numbers)
  • In the command prompt, type adb shell pm hide
  • Now when you press your device’s home button, it should return to your alternative launcher. To get the standard launcher back, return to the command prompt and type adb shell pm unhide

I’ve confirmed that this works on the Nvidia Shield Android TV. And unlike the more basic workaround that eliminates Nvidia’s home screen section, launching the Shield Hub app from an alternative launcher preserves access to GameStream and Nvidia’s game store.

One of Android’s strengths has always been the ability to customize, so it’s a shame Google makes power users go through so many steps to change the home screen. But at least it’s still possible.

Smoking hookah at home pollutes indoor air more than cigarettes

Smoking hookah at home pollutes indoor air more than cigarettesSmoking hookah at home pollutes indoor air more than cigarettes
People smoking hookah in their homes generate carbon monoxide, a toxic gas, and tiny pollution particles known as PM 2.5 at levels at least double those produced by cigarettes, according to a recent study in Dubai.

Even in the rooms adjacent to where people smoked hookah, air pollution levels were much higher than in rooms where cigarettes were actively smoked, researchers report in the journal Tobacco Control. “There are widespread misconceptions that hookah is a safer alternative to cigarettes,” said lead author Dr. Michael Weitzman, a professor at New York University School of Medicine.

“Smoking hookahs (water pipes) at home can be terribly dangerous for the smoker, but perhaps more importantly, for children and other people living in the home,” Weitzman told Reuters Health by email. During one hookah-smoking session, a smoker can inhale the equivalent of the smoke from 150 cigarettes, according to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

Hookahs are among alternative tobacco products like chewing tobacco whose use has been on the rise in the U.S., especially among young people, the study authors note. Among high school students, 14 percent of girls and 15 percent of boys said they had used a hookah in 2014, as did one quarter of young adults in 2015.

To determine the effect smoking has on indoor environments, the study team collected air samples from 33 homes in Dubai: 11 where only hookah smokingoccurred, 12 with only cigarette smoking and 10 with no smoking at all.

The study team sampled the air quality in the rooms where people smoked and in an adjacent room during about one hour of hookah or cigarette smoking, and compared the readings to nonsmoking homes.

The researchers used air filters to measure levels of carbon monoxide, black carbon and pollution particles 2.5 microns or smaller (PM 2.5), which can penetrate deep into the lungs and enter the bloodstream.

During sampling sessions, there were between one and four active hookah smokers, with an average of 1.7, and one to five active cigarette smokers, with an average of 2.3. In rooms where hookahs were being smoked, carbon monoxide levels averaged 11 parts per million and the PM 2.5 level was 489 micrograms per cubic meter of air. In the adjacent room, carbon monoxide levels averaged 5.8 ppm and PM 2.5 pollution was 211 micrograms/m3.

In rooms with cigarette smoking, carbon monoxide averaged 2.3 ppm and PM 2.5 averaged 201 micrograms. Levels in the adjacent room were about half. In nonsmoking homes, carbon monoxide levels averaged 1.5 ppm while PM 2.5 levels averaged 93 micrograms. Black carbon levels during active smoking were 5.4 micrograms/m3 with active hookah smoking, 4.2 with active cigarette smoking and 2.1 in nonsmoking homes.

There is no regulatory standard for black carbon levels, the authors write, but the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency says being exposed to more than 9 ppm of carbon monoxide over an eight-hour period is unsafe and the World Health Organization limits PM 2.5 exposure in outdoor air to 35 micrograms/m3 over 24 hours

Hands on with Google Home: Your Google universe in a home-appliance wrapper

It’s impossible to discuss Google Home in a vacuum. It’s a direct, blatant, so-obvious-it-hurts competitor to the Amazon Echo—and if you spend just a few minutes with it, you may come away feeling it’s got the Echo’s number.

Like the Echo, Google Home can start playing music with simple voice prompts. But itsounds better than the Echo, with much deeper bass. I only spent about 10 minutes with Google Home at Google’s hardware launch event on Tuesday, and I certainly didn’t have an Echo handy for A/B testing, but it took only five seconds of a Hooverphonic track to tell that Google Home delivers better low-end punch. On the flipside, Google Home didn’t sound particularly loud. It was difficult to tell given the din of the event, but this is definitely an issue we need to test.

Like the Echo, Google Home can answer questions, tapping into a hidden database of knowledge. But where the Echo runs off Bing search, and is often stymied by tough queries, Google Home taps into the full Google knowledge graph and all its “featured snippets” extensions. In essence, Google Home is an always-aware iteration of the Google Assistant, and can handle a wide breadth of real-language queries. If you ask, “How old is Barack Obama?” followed by, “How tall is he?” Google Home will know “he” is referring to Obama.

Google says the design for Google Home was inspired by glasses and candles.

There’s only so much you can do with Google Home in a demo environment. You really need the device connected to your Google account, a pairing that gives you meaningful information when you ask, “OK Google, what’s my day looking like?” Google Home will come back with local weather info, personalized commute details, calendar obligations, and reminders.

And, of course, once you connect Google Home to your Google universe, the appliance will also plumb the depths of your Music collection and other Googlely entry points. But one thing Google could demo was Google Home’s talents as a smart home hub. The device was connected to a Nest thermostat, and a voice prompt of “OK Google, lower the temperature to 70 degrees” went off without a hitch. Similarly, “Play Shakira on Chromecast” started a YouTube video playing on a nearby TV.

About the same size as a Pixel phone, Google Home is short but delivers better base response than the Amazon Echo.

As we’ve already pointed out, Amazon has a significant lead in third-party integration with various smart home platforms. Only time will tell if Google can catch up, but based on Tuesday’s reveal, Google Home’s prowess as a device control may be its only weak link.

At $129, Google Home costs $50 less than the Amazon Echo, and it looks better too. Google Home is small and unassuming, and looks far less gadgety than Amazon’s take on exactly the same concept. The device benefits from an asymmetrical design that’s vaguely Scandinavian in its visual cues. Currently, the only pre-order option is for a “white slate” color theme, but Google says various colored bases in metal and fabric will eventually be available.

Google tells is our Google Home review unit should be arriving in the next couple weeks, so stand by for a full review—as well as a direct comparison to its natural competitor.

each cumulative update is one of a kind, however there’s a handful of hints which can help jolt your devicereturned into attention while a troubling cumulative update strikes. if you’re having troubles, the followingsolutions are worth a try. I’ve averted hints that seem vintage-in-the-tooth in recent times. As exceptional i’m able to inform, fewlatest cumulative replace troubles are solved through developing a brand new consumer account (even though there are exceptions). Nor have I hit any mass resets of file institutions, which is a hassle that plagued in advance cumulative updates. I’m additionally stepping lightly over windows cellular — sorry, it’s a totally one of a kind can of worms.

This isn’t intended to be an exhaustive listing of issues and answers. as a substitute, it tackles the maximumcommonplace issues, presenting the most common answers. And if your home windows 10 updatingenjoy has been strong, remember your self some of the fortunate.

For the relaxation folks, bookmark this page. you can discover your self coming again time and again.

earlier than you do some thing else
make sure your antivirus software is turned off. That’s the No. 1 supply of awful updates — or no updates.

take a look at for mundane hardware troubles
Coincidences appear. positive, your computer went to Hades in a handbasket proper after you set up thetrendy cumulative replace, but that doesn’t imply the replace prompted the hassle.

It’s the antique post hoc ergo propter hoc fallacy.

remember the possibility that your problem has nothing to do with the cumulative update. at least, anyonewith a cumulative replace trouble have to rightclick on begin, choose Command spark off, kind chkdsk /f in the box and press input. That’ll experiment your major pressure and fix any mistakes.

if you’re having troubles with a mouse or keyboard, or a reveal or speaker, try plugging them into some otherpc to look if they’re lifeless.

it’s rudimentary, however it works relatively regularly.

get over a bricked computer
For most people this is the scariest situation. The cumulative update installs itself (possibly overnight, whileyou aren’t searching), and whilst you come lower back in your gadget, nothing takes place. It’s useless, Jim.

90 instances (or at the least 50, tough to mention) out of one hundred, you could get returned to a workingsystem with the aid of booting into secure Mode, uninstalling the cumulative replace, blocking off it, then rebooting commonly.

My vintage friend Lincoln Spector has the rundown on booting into safe Mode in a laptop international article from ultimate October. alas, booting into secure Mode isn’t as smooth in home windows 10 because itturned into in windows 8.1 (or another windows, for that remember).

after you’re in secure Mode, observe the instructions within the sectionensure your hassle is the patch,”below, to uninstall the aberrant cumulative replace. Then observe the commands in the segmentescape of the infinite update loop,” underneath, to ensure you aren’t tossed returned into the hearth. Reboot and also you’ll be lower back for your preceding version of windows 10.

recognize when to give up
a few people, in a few conditions, record that going thru the update procedure takes hours — many hours, with more than one restarts and hangs. My high-quality advice: permit the replace run for 3 or four hours. in case you come lower back to the ones spinning dots, then it’s time to tug the plug (actually flip the electricityoff), reboot, and see if things labored or not.

you can continually see what version you’re strolling. In Cortana’s search box, kind winver and press inputto see which model you’re on. compare it to Microsoft’s professional Win10 replace records listing.

(See “walk away and forget about it,” beneath.)

ensure your trouble is the patch
First, restart your device at least 3 instances. I don’t understand why, but rebooting numerous instancesevery so often shakes out the gremlins.

2nd, try to uninstall the patch and spot if the trouble is going away. click start > Settings > replace & security> superior alternatives > View your update history > Uninstall updates. With a bit of luck, the aberrant updatewill appear at the pinnacle of the Microsoft windows replace list, as you could see inside the screenshot.

Microsoft home windows 10 update listing

Double-click at the replace and whilst windows asks, “Are you certain you need to uninstall this update?”respond yes. home windows will take a whilemaybe a protracted even as — to reboot, and whilst it comeslower back, you should be retreated to the preceding (possibly practical) version of Win10.

straight away check to see whether or not your problem went away. If it did, use Wushowhide (instructionswithin the subsequent section) to cover the bad patch. if your trouble persists, possibilities are desirablethe cumulative replace didn’t motive the hassle. in that case, get onto the trendy model: Reboot, go to home windows update (begin > Settings > update & safety > take a look at for updates) and re-install the patch. Your problem probably doesn’t lie with this precise replace. be aware the operative termpossibly.”

some patches catch software manufacturers flat-footed. as an example, the present day patch (KB 3147458) broke the interplay laptop on ININ cellphone structures; it also broke the computing deviceversion of Pershing’s broker application NetX360. If a software you commonly use goes belly-up right afterinstalling the replace, get over to the producer’s internet site fast and bitch loudly. chances are they mayultimately tell you to uninstall the Win 10 patch or observe a brand new patch in their personal.

the sooner you could get them started out on a fix, the earlier every person will get it.

get away of the limitless update loop
It’s like looking a laptop bang its head against the wall, over and over and over again.

occasionally the cumulative replace fails — you see a message sayinginstallation failed,” or some thingcomparable, observed by “Undoing changes.” while your machine comes lower back to lifestyles an hour or or 5 or six later, it goes proper again to trying to install the equal cumulative update. You get the sameblunders. Wash, rinse, repeat.

you would possibly want to let your machine go through the entire self-mutilation cycle twice to peerwhether you get fortunate, however after that it’s too painful. You want to place Win10 out of its distress.

luckily, Microsoft has a device that’ll do precisely that — it’ll inform windows replace to forestall looking forthe specific cumulative replace that’s inflicting issues. The device wasn’t built for stopping cumulative updates dead of their tracks, however it really works though.

AdBlock, AdBlock Plus arrives for home windows 10 Insider users

microsoft edge

AdBlock for Microsoft facet is still officially “coming quickly.” however in case you’re jogging the present day windows Insider construct of home windows 10, you could strive AdBlock and AdBlock Plus before all people else.

according to WinBeta, users of windows 10 Insider construct 14332 can now installation the famous ad-blockers for home windows side. each AdBlock and AdBlock Plus are available as free downloads from thehome windows store, as @h0x0d on Twitter notes.

up to now, the two similarly named—however in any other case unrelated—f9ef7d9e905d1a4504697a5c6dd610d7 are receiving superb reviews from customers, and both havecommon ratings of four stars or higher. That said, WinBeta notes that the extensiadd-ons aren’t working foreach person, so you may also stumble upon troubles.

The tale at the back of the tale: side is the successor to net Explorer, which has lost relevance in latest years and has turn out to be the target of memes, jokes, and ridicule. even though facet is a big improvement over IE, Microsoft has had a difficult time convincing users to jump from Google Chrome or Firefox and transfer topart. in keeping with information from analytics company internet programs, part held a trifling 3.9percentage of the browser marketplace as of February, accounting for 8.eight percent of all Microsoft browsers in use.

Are extensiaccessories enough to sway users again?
