Elderly women who sit for more than 10 hours a day with low physical activity have cells that are biologically older by eight years compared to women who are less sedentary, a new study has found.

Researchers from University of California (UC) found that women who have a sedentary lifestyle have cells that are biologically older and invite cardiovascular diseases and diabetes as compared to women who are active and exercise regularly.

“Our study found cells age faster with a sedentary lifestyle. Chronological age doesn’t always match biological age,” said lead researcher Aladdin Shadyab from UC.

Elderly women with less than 40 minutes of moderate-to-vigorous physical activity per day and who remain sedentary for more than 10 hours per day have shorter telomeres — tiny caps found on the ends of DNA strands that protect chromosomes from deterioration and progressively shorten with age.

As a cell ages, its telomeres naturally shorten and fray and make a body prone to cardiovascular disease, diabetes and major cancers.

“We found that women who sat longer did not have shorter telomere length if they exercised for at least 30 minutes a day, the national recommended guideline,” said Shadyab in a study published in the American Journal of Epidemiology.

EVGA battles GTX 10-series overheating with faster fan speeds, free thermal pads

That’s the gist of EVGA’s response to overheating concerns over its GTX 10-series graphics with the ACX 3.0 cooler. The issue reared its head when Tom’s Hardware Germany tested the EVGA GTX 1080 FTW and found that the lack of a cooling solution for the card’s voltage regulator module area prompted those VRMs to reach incredibly high temperatures—up to 106.8 degrees Celsius—when pushed to their limits with Furmark, a stress-test utility that hammers graphics cards much harder than actual games.

That was accompanied by overheating complaints by numerous users on forums who say they weren’t using Furmark, as well as scary pictures and YouTube videos like this one:

EVGA says its cards run just fine under normal gaming scenarios, and anecdotally, I’ve been heavily using an EVGA GTX 1080 FTW for months without issue (or additional overclocking). The default fix for this issue will make the cards louder, however, and you have to wonder why the company skimped on a robust cooling solution for the VRMs in the first place as these are higher-end cards.

We’ve reached out to EVGA for clarification on how many users officially reported overheating issues with their ACX 3.0-equipped graphics cards. Update: EVGA’s Jacob Freeman responded with the following:

“We are investigating these reports. I can say it is extremely rare and does not seem to be related to temperature or overheating, but we are investigating the root cause still.”

Chilling out

The issue stems from the design of EVGA’s custom ACX 3.0 cooler, and 22 GTX 10-series graphics card models from EVGA are affected. EVGA’s attacking the issue with a twofold response.

First, a Video BIOS update for affected models will be pushed out “in the next few days,” increasing default fan speeds to help drive temperatures lower. “Users can download it and update their cards directly,” EVGA says. “This update resolves the potential thermal issues that have been reported, and ensures the card maintains safe operating temperatures.” Every EVGA graphics card shipped after November 1 will run the modified VBIOS by default.

The solution essentially brute-forces more air across the VRM area rather than actually fixing the core design issue. Until it rolls out, you could jerry-rig a similar solution on your own by creating custom fan profiles in overclocking tools like MSI Afterburner or EVGA’s own PrecisionXOC.

If that isn’t enough to calm your nerves, the company’s also providing free, optional thermal pads to anyone who asks for some via EVGA’s website. You’ll need to register an account to get one, however, and EVGA flat-out says the pads are “not required.” They may be the preferred option for tinker-friendly PC gamers, however, as we’ll discuss later.

The company will honor its full warranty on these cards, and if you don’t feel comfortable installing an updated VBIOS yourself, EVGA will provide cross-ship RMA support—meaning the company will send you a new card, and you ship your current card back in the same box. You’ll need to put up the “collateral” price of the card in the interim, but EVGA will refund that in full when it receives your original graphics card.

Fix results

EVGA provided GamersNexus with a test build of the updated VBIOS, which dropped VRM temperatures by 14 degrees Celsius when tested with Furmark, from 109 degrees to 95 degrees—“well within reasonable operating range,” as GamersNexus puts it. The site also received EVGA’s optional thermal pads and reports that they drop VRM temperatures all the way down to roughly 85 degrees even without the VBIOS update installed, or a chilly 80 degrees with both the thermal pads and the VBIOS in place.

The updated VBIOS update made the GTX 1080 FTW’s fans noticeably louder, GamersNexus reports, so you may want to opt for the free thermal pad option instead if you don’t like the sound of that (har har) and feel comfortable tearing apart your card. Here are EVGA’s instructions for applying the pads. If you want the pads but find the process daunting, I suggest calling up EVGA to see if you can arrange an RMA for a card with the thermal pads pre-applied.

Fingers crossed that those thermal pads will start to be applied by default to new graphics cards coming out of EVGA’s factories in the future.

Faster, longer-range Bluetooth 5 to reach devices soon

A new version of the Bluetooth wireless spec will be coming to devices soon, giving users faster connectivity among devices over longer distances.

The new version, Bluetooth 5, is a big upgrade over Bluetooth 4.2, the current specification. In a clear line of sight, the range of Bluetooth 5 could stretch to 400 meters, said analysts at The Linley Group in a research note this week. That means users could connect a smartphone to a Bluetooth speaker that may not even be visible.

Final Bluetooth 5 specifications will be disclosed by the end of this year or early next year, the Linley analysts said.

In a typical, realistic setting, Bluetooth 5 will offer a range of up to 120 meters, which is four times that of Bluetooth 4.2, and be two times faster, with data transfer rates of 2Mbps, said Chuck Sabin, director for business strategy at the Bluetooth-Special Interest Group, which sets the standards for Bluetooth.

Historically, once a final Bluetooth specification is released, devices quickly follow suit, Sabin said. So if the Bluetooth 5 specification is finalized and released late this year, devices that use it could come early next year, Sabin said.

Early versions of Bluetooth were used in audio equipment, headsets and cars. But Bluetooth has evolved; it’s now central to the internet of things and is being used in smart home products, medical devices, drones, robots, smart meters and wearables. It is competing with wireless technologies like Wi-Fi and ZigBee.

The faster speed, longer range and error correction features in Bluetooth 5 will make it easier to push firmware to devices, Sabin said. That will be especially helpful for automobiles, smart meters and medical devices designed to be placed inside the body.

Bluetooth 5 will also have one-to-many messaging capabilities. For example, devices will be able to transmit data from a wearable to multiple devices. That capability will help in IoT, where a smart meter could transmit data to multiple computing and data sources.

Another improvement in Bluetooth 5 is the ability to broadcast richer data, including location information, URLs and multimedia files. For example, multiple sensors in a store could provide internal GPS-style navigation to a specific item. Bluetooth 5 could also be useful for self-driving cars, which have to communicate with many sensors and external sources like traffic lights.

Devices that support the latest Bluetooth and Bluetooth Low-Energy versions may be upgradeable to Bluetooth 5 via firmware. Otherwise, devices will require new chips and controllers, which are already being developed, Linley analysts said in the research note. For example, Texas Instruments’ CC2640 wireless chip will support the Bluetooth 5 standard.

The computer software intuitively translates patient charts into diagnostic information at 30 times human speed and with 99 per cent accuracy, the researchers reported in a paper published online in the journal Cancer.

“This software intelligently reviews millions of records in a short amount of time, enabling us to determine breast cancer risk more efficiently using a patient’s mammogram,” said one of the researchers Stephen Wong from Houston Methodist Research Institute in the US.

“This has the potential to decrease unnecessary biopsies,” Wong noted.

The team used the AI software to evaluate mammograms and pathology reports of 500 breast cancer patients.

The software scanned patient charts, collected diagnostic features and correlated mammogram findings with breast cancer subtype.

Clinicians used results, like the expression of tumour proteins, to accurately predict each patient’s probability of breast cancer diagnosis.

Manual review of 50 charts took two clinicians 50-70 hours. AI reviewed 500 charts in a few hours, saving over 500 physician hours.

Currently, when mammograms fall into the suspicious category, a broad range of three to 95 per cent cancer risk, patients are recommended for biopsies.

Over 1.6 million breast biopsies are performed annually in the US, and about 20 per cent are unnecessarily performed due to false-positive mammogram results of cancer free breasts, estimates the American Cancer Society.

The team hopes this artificial intelligence software will help physicians better define the per cent risk requiring a biopsy, equipping doctors with a tool to decrease unnecessary breast biopsies.

Sleep makes relearning faster and longer-lasting

Getting some sleep in between study sessions may make it easier to recall what you studied and relearn what you’ve forgotten, even 6 months later, according to new findings from Psychological Science, a journal of the Association for Psychological Science.

“Our results suggest that interleaving sleep between practice sessions leads to a twofold advantage, reducing the time spent relearning and ensuring a much better long-term retention than practice alone,” explains psychological scientist Stephanie Mazza of the University of Lyon. “Previous research suggested that sleeping after learning is definitely a good strategy, but now we show that sleeping between two learning sessions greatly improves such a strategy.”

While studies have shown that both repeated practice and sleep can help improve memory, there is little research investigating how repetition and sleep influence memory when they are combined. Mazza and colleagues hypothesized that sleeping in between study sessions might make the relearning process more efficient, reducing the effort needed to commit information to memory.

A total of 40 French adults were randomly assigned to either a “sleep” group or a “wake” group. At the first session, all participants were presented with 16 French-Swahili word pairs in random order. After studying a pair for 7 seconds, the Swahili word appeared and participants were prompted to type the French translation. The correct word pair was then shown for 4 seconds. Any words that were not correctly translated were presented again, until each word pair had been correctly translated.

Twelve hours after the initial session, the participants completed the recall task again, practicing the whole list of words until all 16 words were correctly translated.

Importantly, some participants completed the first session in the morning and the second session in the evening of the same day (“wake” group); others completed the first session in the evening, slept, and completed the second session the following morning (“sleep” group).

In the first session, the two groups showed no difference in how many words they could initially recall or in the number of trials they needed to be able to remember all 16 word pairs.

But after 12 hours, the data told another story: Participants who had slept between sessions recalled about 10 of the 16 words, on average, while those who hadn’t slept recalled only about 7.5 words. And when it came to relearning, those who had slept needed only about 3 trials to be able to recall all 16 words, while those who had stayed awake needed about 6 trials.

Ultimately, both groups were able to learn all 16 word pairs, but sleeping in between sessions seemed to allow participants to do so in less time and with less effort.

“Memories that were not explicitly accessible at the beginning of relearning appeared to have been transformed by sleep in some way,” says Mazza. “Such transformation allowed subjects to re-encode information faster and to save time during the relearning session.”

The memory boost that participants got from sleeping between sessions seemed to last over time. Follow-up data showed that participants in the sleep group outperformed their peers on the recall test 1 week later. The sleep group showed very little forgetting, recalling about 15 word pairs, compared to the wake group, who were able to recall about 11 word pairs. This benefit was still noticeable 6 months later.

The benefits of sleep could not be ascribed to participants’ sleep quality or sleepiness, or to their short-term or long-term memory capacity, as the two groups showed no differences on these measures.

The results suggest that alternating study sessions with sleep might be an easy and effective way to remember information over longer periods of time with less study, Mazza and colleagues conclude.

“Not getting restorative sleep may do more than just affect our functioning the next day; it might also influence the rate at which our biological clock ticks,” said Judith Carroll, an assistant professor of psychiatry at the UCLA Semel Institute for Neuroscience and Human Behavior and the Cousins Center for Psychoneuroimmunology, and first author of the sleep study. “In the women we studied, those reporting symptoms such as restless sleep, waking repeatedly at night, having difficulty falling asleep, and waking too early in the morning tended to be older biologically than women of similar chronological age who reported no symptoms.”

For their findings, both studies used a “biological clock” developed by Horvath, which has become a widely used method for tracking the epigenetic shift in the genome. Epigenetics is the study of changes to DNA packaging that influence which genes are expressed but don’t affect the DNA sequence itself.

The Menopause Connection

In the menopause study, Horvath and first author Morgan Levine tracked methylation, a chemical biomarker linked to aging, to analyze DNA samples from more than 3,100 women enrolled in four large studies, including the Women’s Health Initiative (WHI) a major 15-year research program that addressed the most common causes of death, disability and poor quality of life in postmenopausal women. They measured the biological age of cells from blood, saliva and inside the cheek, to explore the relationship between each woman’s chronological age and her body’s biological age.

“We discovered that menopause speeds up cellular aging by an average of 6 percent,” said Horvath. “That doesn’t sound like much but it adds up over a woman’s lifespan.”

Take, for example, a woman who enters early menopause at age 42. Eight years later, he said, her body would be a full year older biologically than another 50-year-old woman who entered menopause naturally at age 50.

“On average, the younger a woman is when she enters menopause, the faster her blood ages,” explained Levine, a postdoctoral researcher in Horvath’s lab. “This is significant because a person’s blood may mirror what’s happening in other parts of the body, which could have implications for death and disease risk.”

The Importance of Sleep

In the sleep study, Carroll and her colleagues drew their data from more than 2,000 women in the WHI. Using the epigenetic clock, they found that postmenopausal women with five insomnia symptoms were nearly two years older biologically than women the same chronological age with no insomnia symptoms.

“We can’t conclude definitively from our study that the insomnia leads to the increased epigenetic age, but these are powerful findings,” said Carroll. “In the future, we will need to carry out studies of the same individuals over an extended period of time to determine cause-and-effect relationships between biological age and sleep disorders.”

While both studies are bad news for many women, Horvath suggests that scientists in the future may use the epigenetic clock as a diagnostic tool to evaluate the effects of therapies, like hormone therapy for menopause.

“The big question is which menopausal hormone therapy offers the strongest anti-aging effect while limiting health risks,” said Horvath.

“No longer will researchers need to follow patients for years to track their health and occurrence of diseases. Instead we can use the epigenetic clock to monitor their cells’ aging rate and to evaluate which therapies slow the biological aging process,” explained Horvath. “This could greatly reduce the length and costs of clinical trials and speed benefits to women.”

Later in the day, participants were provided with a pasta lunch which they were asked to consume until they felt ‘comfortably full’. Their lunchtime consumption of energy and fat was assessed and calculated, taking into account the amount of energy and fat burned during the morning period.

The researchers discovered that those who had exercised in the morning did not consume additional calories or experience increased appetite during the day to compensate for their earlier activity.

They also found that those who had exercised in a fasted state burned almost 20% more fat compared to those who had consumed breakfast before their workout. This means that performing exercise on an empty stomach provides the most desirable outcome for fat loss.

Javier Gonzalez, who is currently undertaking a PhD in Exercise and Metabolism, said: “In order to lose body fat we need to use more fat than we consume. Exercise increases the total amount of energy we expend and a greater proportion of this energy comes from existing fat if the exercise is performed after an overnight fast.

“Our results show that exercise does not increase your appetite, hunger or food consumption later in the day and to get the most out of your session it may be optimal to perform this after an overnight fast.”

Dr Emma Stevenson, Senior Lecturer in Sport and Exercise Nutrition and Associate Director of Northumbria University’s Brain, Performance and Nutrition Research Centre, added: “This research is very important in helping to provide practical guidelines relating to food intake to individuals who are exercising to maximise fat mass loss. It must be highlighted that this is a short-term study and we can only speculate on the longer term outcomes of such nutritional practices.”
