Quern – Undying Thoughts review: The closest we may ever come to a Riven sequel

Quern - Undying Thoughts

2016 was one hell of a year for Myst-alikes, eh? Straight from the source, from Cyan itself, you had official spiritual successor Obduction—a game which crept onto our Games of the Year list. Then there was The Eyes of Ara, which utilized the same sort of puzzles although in quite a different sort of setting.

But I wish I’d gotten around to playing Quern – Undying Thoughts. I don’t know why I didn’t, although it certainly wasn’t helped by a late November release nor its impenetrable title.

Quern – Undying Thoughts

I recently delved into Quern’s world though—nothing like those slow Januarys for catching up on your backlog—and it’s excellent. Like Myst of old, you arrive in an area with no idea how you got there or what you should be doing. In this case you’ve been teleported to an island by way of a massive gateway which promptly self-destructs upon your arrival.

There’s a way off the island though, approximately 50 locked doors and dozens of puzzles in your future. Puzzles involving gears and simple mechanical contraptions, puzzles involving audio cues, puzzles involving some lightweight botany, and puzzles involving a whole series of crystals each of which has its own unique properties.

Quern - Undying Thoughts

Quern – Undying Thoughts

Along the way you’ll delve into the origins of the titular island, Quern. The island’s previous occupant has left behind directives, notes on the peculiar properties Quern possesses, the secrets he’s uncovered and what he’s done with said knowledge. His journal entries lead you from area to area, sometimes giving context, sometimes giving clues, and all apparently part of some plan. But what plan? And why?

It’s as close to a Myst game as I’ve ever seen from another developer. Or rather, a Riven game. Just look at the architecture here:

Quern – Undying Thoughts

This is the first village you enter. It’s your main hub and where you’ll spend a good portion of Quern. And it’s incredibly reminiscent of the bleached-white adobe buildings that dotted Riven’s Jungle Island:

Riven

Those huts may represent the most obvious parallel, but the game reeks of Cyan’s mid-’90s output. It has the same sense of weary isolation, the same unexpected warmth to its grimy copper gizmos, and that feeling of “Normal” and “Alien” bashed together in one place. Here, a library. There, a forge. Everyday objects, but all of it residing in a world so unique and unusual.

Between the focus on mechanical puzzles and the aesthetic nod, Quern feels like the Riven successor we never really got (and likely never will get). It’s grim and lonesome in the same way that made Riven a classic—and much closer in tone to Riven than Cyan’s actual sequel, Myst III.

Quern - Undying Thoughts

And it takes the same approach to puzzles—not just in terms of aesthetics, but philosophically. Quern loves introducing new ideas and puzzle constraints at a rapid pace and then disposing of them at will, adhering to a certain internal logic but unconcerned with building on its own foundation.

Hell, there’s even a puzzle similar to Riven’s famous spinning room.

Quern’s not nearly as bash-your-head-against-a-wall obtuse, of course. While Riven occasionally stumps me even today, twenty or so years after I first played it, Quern is breezier. Benefiting from an additional two decades of puzzle design and fully 3D environments, it took me maybe eight or nine hours to get through. Not too bad.

Quern - Undying Thoughts

Quern – Undying Thoughts

It’s also not a perfect game. Some of its puzzles fall into the typical adventure game trap—very obvious solution buried under a cumbersome series of steps. One puzzle is just a retread of the Knights of the Old Republic puzzle where you do a bunch of column math to blow up injector pods on Manaan. (Yes, it’s as boring as it sounds.) And you do it three times here. Ugh. There are a few other stinkers, but that one’s the worst.

The game also includes a seemingly handy Notebook feature, which is supposed to function like in-game screenshots. You see something important, a clue to a puzzle, and you can “jot it down in your notebook” at the touch of a button. Quern then makes a cool little sketch-representation of whatever item you were looking at.

The Indian Institute of Management (IIM) Calcutta’s Social Informatics Research Group has decided to come up with a project in order to build the next-generation of collaborative and responsive rural community by digitally empowering them. This project is a part of a larger project funded by Information Technology Research Academy.

The objective:

  • The objective of the project, NCoRe, is to analyse and measure the strength and influence of smart-phone enabled social information systems on the socio-economic performance of self-help groups, the micro-communities in rural India
  • Another objective is to empower the rural community and enhance their participation in not only improving their livelihood, but also help the government with local situational information during any natural or man-made disaster

Somprakash Bandyopdhyay, Professor, MIS Group and Research Director, Social Informatics Research Group, IIMC said ”The NCoRe would primarily address the current problem of the information gap between rural SHGs and the urban market.”

Usage of smart phones:

Panasonic India is partnering with social informatics research group in this project whose objective is to train 50 SHG members of Kandi SHG Federation, Murshidabad on the use of smart phones. Counterpoint: Samsung’s share of India’s premium smartphone market may come down drastically

According to a new report from market research firm Counterpoint Research, Samsung’s share of India’s premium smartphone market – which currently stands at 58% – may come down drastically to 35% in the fourth quarter of 2016.

Not only this would be the lowest share for the South Korean company in many years, it would also result in the firm losing its top spot in the country’s premium segment, which includes phones priced at INR 30,000 (around $450) and above.

As for why Samsung would be losing such a significant chunk, the report notes a couple of reasons: the Galaxy Note7 fiasco and strong iPhone 7 sales.

Needless to say, and as the report also notes, Samsung’s loss would be Apple’s gain – the Cupertino-based company is expected to claim a share of 57% in India’s premium smartphone market in Q4.

When reached out for comment, Manu Sharma (Vice President, Mobile Business, Samsung India) refuted such reports saying, “We don’t agree at all. In fact, we are doing exceedingly well with record sales in mobile business and the festive season has started on a high for us. We continue to sustain our leadership position across all price points.”

“We are seeing a very good off-take of powerful S7 and S7 Edge devices… The industry analysts research reports are not based on empirical facts. Such projections by any research agency or analyst, therefore, is incorrect,” he added.

Needless to say, the service will allow users to backup their data to the cloud. This will not only help save storage space on their device, but will also let them access backed-up data from any of the supported devices. Galaxy Note7 users will get 5GB cloud storage for free, the report notes.

As for Galaxy Note7, the report says the device will feature the latest Gorilla Glass 5 protection, and a USB-C to microUSB adapter will be included in the box.

Mark Hamill talks Squadron 42: Oh how a long way we’ve come since Wing Commander

markhamill4

Mark Hamill is lots busier this time round in big name Wars Episode VIII. The actor, who reprised hisposition as Luke Skywalker in big name Wars: The force Awakens, took a ruin after an extended day of filming the franchise’s eighth installment at London’s Pinewood Studios to speak approximately his go backto video video games.

Hamill is part of an all-big name forged that hung out with game clothier Chris Roberts (writer of Wing Commander) to carry full overall performanceseize performing to the characters in Squadron forty two.the imminent computer movement sport is a part of the large crowdfunded celebrity Citizen universe. Hamill talks approximately his second stint with Roberts, and what sort of technology has superior within the computer gaming area, in this unique interview.

What turned into it like reteaming with Chris Roberts after such a lot of years?
What a wonderful performing marvel. It seemed to be a yr of satisfied surprises, to get called returnedthrough The Flash human beings, assuming they’re going to have me play The Warden. And lo and behold, they need me to play The Trickster again. What a satisfaction! A notable part, and some thing that i’d in no way concept i’d return to. you may say that about the star Wars franchise. identical story.

And with Chris, from the primary time I met him, I just ought to relate to him so without difficulty. he is funto be around. he is rather clever, so personable, so informed and enthusiastic about the task that he wasdescribing. I performed video games with my youngsters after they had been small, but at this factor, Iwithout a doubt failed to recognize what a bounce ahead the era has taken over time, so I had no expectation. I notion this was a closed chapter in my existence, and while he known as and said, i’d such as you to do that, I didn’t even must examine the script. I frequent straight away because I agree withhim so deeply.

at the time, Wing Commander was slicing area, however now so many years later this big name Citizen: Squadron forty two is pushing matters plenty further. What become it like to step into this overall performance capture?
The technology now could be the following era of the facial rigs and the entire 3D scans of the actors, and it permits a lot extra detail and nuance. lower back then, just the truth that you had stay movementcharacters to simulate nearly a film enjoy became a feat. that is integrating the characters into its ownworld, so there is a brotherly love to all the elements, and it is top notch. You put those rigs on andthey’ve got these cameras to your face. they have got such a lot of distinct cameras across the studio.

markhamill2
performanceseize performing includes three cameras at the face, 50 cameras capturing body actions, and an entire lot of sensors.
in which did you movie?
We filmed this at the Imaginarium Studios, that is Andy Serkis’ studio at Ealing Studios—the oldest studio on England. It opened in 1912, the yr the titanic went down, and all my favored Ealing comedies were filmed in there, so I loved just the records of it.

however to go returned for your question, that is what is considered the next stage in overall performance seize. the whole thing makes use of one to 3 cameras on the actors’ faces. Plus there are 50 cameras capturing their moves. so that you‘re in this bare-bones studio with apple packing containersfor chairs and simply the primary rudimentary timber systems to approximate the cockpits and so forth, and but when you appearance at the display, you notice what they may be getting. it’s totally found out. So it is nearly beyond even performing some of the stuff which you do on green screen, whereinyou have a look at the drawing and get an concept of what is eventually to come back down the street. it is very exciting.
