I noticed an immediate softening of fine lines without a gunky feeling. I’m also falling in love with this skincare line, their Puristry Yerba Mate Eye Cream claims to stimulate circulation to help brighten dark circles and reduce puffiness, and while I can’t attest to that for sure, I did notice that my entire eye area looked perked up after using.

While most of us fear that a visit to the dermatologist is in order, there really are products that can help fade the look of damage for at least a quick brightening effect. I’m completely enamored with  Georgette Klinger’s Vitamin C line created to reduce hyperpigmentation and builds collagen for clear, firm skin. I generally don’t love toners since they end up leaving my skin feeling tight or dry, but the upgraded Vitamin C Toner felt like it calmed my face. Since I’m a sucker for a great ingredient list, I was gratified to read that it includes Aloe, Witch Hazel, Watercress, and Elderflower Extracts. I also tested the Vitamin C mask (Argan and avocado oil in this one) and was gratified when my sister commented on how great my skin looked the next day. Meanwhile, if ingredients give you a thrill, you’ll get a kick out of one of the mainstays of the line Kakadu Plum – one of the world’s richest sources of Vitamin C. Best yet, made in the USA, all Georgette Klinger products are cruelty free, paraben free and dye free.
  • Stop being so sensitive: Heat waves can really do a number on your skin, between the sweating and extra exposure to intense heat and arctic air conditioning. “My after picture was taken eight days after the procedure, and I am very happy with results,” says Dr. Cassis. “Most people will need a series of three treatments about a month apart. TIPS: Take one tbsp cold potato juice. Mix it with one tbsp tomato juice. Apply on face and neck. Keep it for half an hour before rinsing off.

Raw milk and honey: Tone your skin with this face mask. It will gently scour off dead cells, dirt and pollution from deep inside your skin pores.

TIPS: Mix one tsp of raw milk with one tsp of pure honey together: Coat a thin layer on your face and neck. Leave it to dry for 15 minutes. Wash with lukewarm water if the skin is oily and normal tap water if the skin is dry.

Besides these therapies, keep your skin well hydrated by drinking water equal to half of your body weight in fluid ounces. Now you can look into your mirror with confidence. SUGAR and SALT SCRUB: So you thought these two are arch-rivals when it comes to adding taste to a dish. They work wonders together as a natural mix in exfoliating and removing not just dirt but also dead skin cells.

Face it: Wet your face, mix the salt and sugar in your palm and move the exfoliator gently in circular motion over your face and wash off. Do this twice a week for a glowing skin.

BANANA and RICE POWDER MIX: Bananas are known to be great moisturisers. This mix will reduce those wrinkles and lighten pimple marks and dark spots.

Face it: Mash a small ripe banana. Add two teaspoons of rice powder and four teaspoons of cold milk and mix well. Apply this thick layer on to your skin and rinse off after 15 minutes. Your skin will be softer and fairer.

ORANGE JUICE: Curb your urge to drink it. Full of vitamins A and C oranges help minimize spots and pigmentation.

Face it: Take three tablespoons of chilled orange juice. Dab it on the face with a cotton ball and wash it off with cold water after 10 minutes. Follow this remedy once a day for three months to get best results.

APPLES: We have all heard that an apple a day keeps a doctor away now it will keep the beautician away too. These are rich in alpha-hydroxy acids that improve skin colour and gives it a natural glow.

Face it: Soak peeled apple cubes in a bowl of milk for half an hour. Then blend them to form a creamy paste. Refrigerate the paste for 15 minutes. Then mix a teaspoon of lemon juice into it and apply all over your face and neck. Wash off after 15-20 minutes with cold water to get a baby-soft and bright glowing skin. Rub ice cube for 5 minutes after removing the pack for better results.

LEMON and ALOE VERA: These two work their magic in ensuring a sparkling whiter complexion and checks ageing of the skin.

Face it: Dissolve two tablespoons of aloe vera gel and juice of half a lemon to half a cup of water. Pour this solution into an ice-cube tray and freeze. Massage your face and neck for 2 minutes daily in the morning with these ice cubes to get an amazingly fairer skin. Do it every day for two-three months for visible results.

ALMOND and MILK: Even now our elders would sing praises of a glass of badam-doodh in warding off cold and cough and in giving a royal glow to our appearances. This is the surest way to look fairer in a week.

Face it: Soak few almonds in half a glass of milk overnight. Grind them along with the same milk to make a fine paste. Hydrate your face till neck with a hot water towel for 1 minute. Then apply this pack on to your face and neck. Rinse off after 15 minutes and see the radiance and fairness on your face. You are ready for that wedding in the evening.

STRAWBERRY BROWN SUGAR and HONEY: Sounds delish right? But this is for your face to make it appear naturally moon white and glowing.

Face it: Mash a ripe strawberry and mix it with a teaspoon of brown sugar and honey. Massage gently for 5 minutes. In case brown sugar is not available you can also use white sugar.

TOMATO JUICE BAKING SODA and HONEY: Apply tomatoes to one’s face for a good glow. The combination of these three items protects the skin from the damage of the sun’s ultraviolet rays and reduces the production of melanin in our skin.

Face it: Put the pulp of a tomato in a mixer-grinder. Add baking soda and honey to it and blend for 1 second. Rub this mixture on to your face and neck in circular movement. Wash it off after 10 minutes. You will see an oil-free and light skin tone.

You can try any of these rosy skin blooming tips that are easy. Always apply any pack not only to your face but apply it on your neck too for a complete fairness look. Besides this natural care don’t forget to keep your skin moisturised with some best quality brightening moisturiser. In the fourth episode of ABC News’ “Healthy Living for Summer” series, we look at how we can take care of our skin while relaxing outside.

Dr. Adriana Schmidt has been a general medical dermatologist for seven years. Working in Southern California, Schmidt said she spends a lot of time on skin exams.

“Sunscreen is the least protective form of sun protection,” Schmidt said.

Below is her advice on staying protected outdoors in the sun.

Quick tips

 

  • Wear protective clothing, such as wide-brimmed hats, bandanas and long sleeves
  • Cover your head, neck, ears, shoulders and chest
  • Try to avoid peak hours, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.
  • Stay in the shade
  • Reapply sunscreen every one to two hours, and make sure it’s at least SPF 30
  • Look at the ingredients in sunscreen (use zinc oxide and titanium dioxide sunscreens, and at least 5 percent is best)

“For kids, zinc and titanium are probably the safest because they don’t have chemical sunscreen ingredients,” Schmidt said.

And if you’re worried about wrinkles, the best advice is to “get the least amount of UV radiation during peak hours, and if you are outside wear clothing, hats and sunscreen,” she said.

Moisturise your skin with this natural face mask

Carrot, avocado, honey and egg face mask for dry ageing skin 

This natural  face mask is packed with antioxidants and moisturising agents that work to hydrate your skin, while also acting to neutralise the free radicals that otherwise cause ageing.

Carrots are rich source of potassium that prevents skin dryness and also contain anti-inflammatory properties to help revitalise and tone up your skin. The other three ingredients, namely, avocado, honey and egg yolk are all moisturising agents.

 

 

Take 1 carrot, peeled and de-stemmed, 1/2 avocado, 1 tablespoon honey, 1/2 tablespoon extra-virgin olive or coconut oil and 1 egg yolk.

Steam or boil the carrot till it turns so tender that a fork can pierce it easily. Blend it along with 1/2 fully ripe avocado in a blender until it forms a uniform consistency pulp. Stir in 1 tablespoon honey, 1 egg yolk and mix well all the ingredients together. Smear it evenly onto your freshly washed face, leaving it there for about 15 minutes. Rinse of the mask with a warm washcloth, followed by applying moisturiser on the still wet skin.

Vitamin D May Ease Sunburns by Reducing Skin Damage

Image result for Vitamin D May Ease Sunburns by Reducing Skin DamageA high dosage of vitamin D after your next sunburn could mean the difference between weeks of agony and a quick recovery.

After exposing 20 participants to a small UV lamp sunburn on the inside of their arms, researchers from Case Western Reserve University in Ohio analyzed how vitamin D helped reduce inflammation. Kurt Lu, senior author and professor of Dermatology at the university and University Hospitals Cleveland Medical Center, said the results depended on the dose each participant was given.

“We found benefits from vitamin D were dose-dependent,” Lu said in a press release. “We hypothesize that vitamin D helps promote protective barriers in the skin by rapidly reducing inflammation. What we did not expect was that at a certain dose, vitamin D not only was capable of suppressing inflammation, it was also activating skin repair genes.”

The participants were given either a placebo pill or 50,000, 100,000 or 200,000 IU of vitamin D an hour after exposure to the UV lamp. Researchers checked in with the participants up to a week after the experiment and collected skin biopsies for further testing.

“The diverse immunomodulatory effects of vitamin D are increasingly being recognized. However, the ability of oral vitamin D to modulate acute inflammation has not been recognized,” the researchers said.

Those who received the largest dose of vitamin D experienced reduced skin inflammation, less epidermal structural damage and reduced expression of pro-inflammatory markers within the skin two days after being exposed to the UV lamp. Participants who had the highest blood levels of vitamin D experienced reduced skin redness and increased gene activity associated with skin cell repair.

“The data may have broad implications for immunotherapeutic properties of vitamin D in skin homeostasis and implicate … regulation as a previously unreported mechanism by which vitamin D exerts anti-inflammatory effects in humans,” the researchers said.

The participants were separated into two clusters based on similarities in their gene expression profiles and differed significantly in their vitamin D levels after treatment. Every individual’s response to vitamin D depended on his/her age, BMI, baseline vitamin D stores and genetic variations.

The researchers suggested that vitamin D has other additional benefits, such as reducing DNA damage. Since vitamin D is relatively cost-effective, the treatment could be used in the near future as an easy fix to sun-related skin damage.

“The simplicity and safety of high dose oral vitamin D treatment, combined with its rapid and sustained therapeutic efficacy, suggest that these proof-of-concept findings may ultimately be translated to routine clinical use once larger studies are performed on diverse populations of subjects,” the researchers said.

Those Black Dots on Your Nose Are Probably Not Blackheads

Blackheads are big business. Products that promise to remove them, treatments that totally tackle them and mesmerizing videos that show people popping them (yes, it’s totally gross and, yes, we’re guilty of tuning in) are undeniably all the rage. But, as New York dermatologist Doris Day, MD, reveals, not are all blackheads are really blackheads at all.

“Some people think the black dots on their nose are clogged pores or blackheads,” she says. “They are, in fact, mostly fine hairs or sebaceous filaments, which is a combination of sebum and skin cells.”

So now that all our skin care beliefs are shaken to the core, how can we tell what’s what? “They’re different from blackheads since those are formed from an obstruction of the follicular opening and are pathologic, while sebaceous filaments are more common and often normally found in the nose, as this is an area with more active sebaceous glands,” Dr. Day explains.

While Montclair, NJ, dermatologist Jeanine B. Downie, MD, does note that many people do have actual blackheads on the nose, she says that, regardless of which one ails you, the course of treatment for both is pretty similar. “They are both treated with light/medium exfoliation, extraction, use of sunblock and chemical peels.”
