ROANOKE (WSLS 10) – An online survey finds 67 percent of Americans will set a New Years Resolution.

The top resolution for 2016 is weight loss or more exercise.

Before you start or ramp up your plan, check with your doctor and then read these tips from Monica Mannino, the training director at Fleet Feet Sports Roanoke.

  1. Set a goal and write it down.  Whether the goal is to run a race, lose a certain amount of weight or commit to going to the gym.  You might realize that you need some smaller goals to reach that bigger one.
  2. Create a Plan.  Many people do too much too quick when they start a new workout routine.  Developing a plan will help stay on track and prevent injuries and will help not it as overwhelming.
  3. Find a Buddy or Two.  This will keep you accountable.  Or else join a group.
  4. WRITE IT DOWN.  Keep a training log whether online or in a journal to keep you accountable to yourself.  This is also a great way to see how you feel.
  5. Make sure you are having fun.  If you aren’t enjoying it, you won’t want to do it.  Try different activities if you need to to figure out what is the best for you!
